Safety rule changes in Brazil stop production of 1960s iconic vehicle. Health and bloody safety ruin peoples fun again.

Read this in the Metro this morning but the Daley Mail artical was easier to find

The point is if someone wanted to be killed to death in some ratty, poorly engineered, 1960’s designed to a cost delivery van. It should be their choice.

I'd buy that argument if it were a single seater. But it's the polar opposite. Time to wave goodbye to an antiquated design for the same reasons we no longer have arsenic in wallpaper or lead in paint.

Drove around SE OZ in a campervan last winter, for 4 months. was enough for me. Like living in a closet with wheels.

Having lived in Brazil, I say it's a good thing. If you go into a showroom today, you can buy a brand new Chevrolet/Ford/VW that won't even come with ABS brakes and air-bags. That's ridiculous (when you consider the car will cost more in Brazil than it does in the USA/Europe). It's about time this rule came in. It stops the manufacturers from selling out dated st like the VW Kombi.

You might look at them romantically here but I can assure you the Brazilians using these Kombi's aren't on a hippy vibe. They are used as Taxi's, Van's, etc.

Thank christ for that.

Asthmatic, antiquated turds that they are. Should have been killed in the 1970's.

I find it awful that we nowadays expect to come out of many crashes pretty much unscathed.

If you want to buy a 1940's designed deathtrap, buy one. A proper one, made in the past. Otherwise I am sure there are plenty of vehicles out there designed in our lifetimes that can do a much better job.

Apart from the old/classic discussion above what surprised me is that they're not replacing it. There will no VW Transporters of any era rolling out of the factory.

If the Combi is being discontinued for legislative reasons rather than sales does that mean that VW are ceeding the small van market to the Koreans or Japanese, or are VW Brasil moving small van to another factory or country?

I love the old 'Proper' campers, not the Brazilian made inbred copies.

They look a bit crap and for the cost of a new Danbury you could have a very nice original one plus plenty of change.

Original ones fetch supercar money if in good nick but in reality, they are dreadful. A modern one (like ours ;-) ) is a billion times better if not as "cool"

This place (in Cornwall) is packed with VW vans in the Summer!!

The early ones are cool, a friend of mine has a fifteen window split screen, it drives incredibly badly and he paid a fortune for it. But, for the coolness its almost worth it, the looks you get are incredible. A real machine which draws attention and makes people smile.

As for the later bay windows, look crap. Drive crap. Not a big deal to see them go, much prefer the shape of the T25's. And they drive far better.

You have a VW van? Must be the first time you've mentioned it on here. Just out of interest, did you finance it or just buy it cash?

It's not the end of production for VW Camper Vans. You can buy a T5 off the shelf or have a van converted.

End of an era, but production couldn't continue indefinitely. There are still plenty about.

Good. Spent many a commute in Brazil in the damn things. Stink of petrol, gutless, noisy.

In short. Hateful.
