Thinking about an 80's Vantage.......
Discussion
I'm thinking about a new car and the 80's Vantage is one of the 'possibles'.
I know the cars spec's etc fairly well but would like to get a bit of info on what these car are like to live with-also anything to be aware of when looking at these?
I'm thinking about making a long trek to look at this one http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/a...
Anyone who knows anything about this car - info would be gratefully received.

I suggest that you make an appeal on the AMOC website, most owners on here have more modern cars except for Richard who could only afford an old one .
Mostly complete dross on this forum with owners posting pics of a chocolate penis or videos of a man urging his wife to drive like a lunatic.
You may even come across George , the only bloke I know that manages to get his "joke" deleted from this forum as not suitable to anyone over the age of 18 months old.
Hope this helps and good luck with your search.

Oi, you should have gone to Specsavers, its a chocolate Santa! Dirty boy.
To the OP - AMOC is better for the older cars. Unless WilliamP puts in a appearance here - he wrote a book about them. And your link isn't working so we can't look a the car.

Have a word Neil ,read the above quote ,that which you wrote.
Makes sense to you ?
Meet you at Specsavers then !

Sean,
Your link would not work on my PC, but I presume that you must be referring to one of these body shapes.
I guess that the later shape will become the sought after one, but who can tell.
As 'avinalarf' says, the most knowledge about these Newport Pagnell built cars, is on the AMOC forum.

There's a buyers guide for the V8s on the AMOC forum http://www.amoc.org/content/view/1564/836/
or Roo has produced some books (no doubt find the link on the AMOC forum but shout if you dont)

Very funny.
Have you seen the recent auction sale prices?
Think you might have got things the wrong way round, Sir.
Unlike Neil ,whose tongue is busy licking his chocolate penis !
Sean the car you linked to is not a true Vantage but a car that has been uprated. At the end of the day a real Vantage is worth more and the one to have. They are becoming few and far between as the collectors have started snapping them up to add to their garages. The best are the first and the last, IE the 1977/78 "Fliptails" and the 1986/87/88/89 "X-Packs". You can read more about them at www.v8vantage.com and also in these articles I wrote for the AMOC before I wrote the books on them. http://v8vantage.com/images/PDF/AMQ.pdf & http://v8vantage.com/images/PDF/AMQ2.pdf Having owned quite a few over the years they are worth seeking out, they combine old school craftsmanship with muscle car presence.

Just had a look on your profile Roo, really do not understand how anything you have to say might add to this discussion. Regards

Thanks Roo, I've been looking more closely in the last few months and have seen a few cars that have been converted in some way, mostly to the bigger engine by the factory - I'm assuming that sort of change is readily accepted in the AM market?Regards
Roo
Does the big-bore engine make much difference to the performance?
My preference is for an original Vantage (and having looked into the linked car today I've decided that's not the one for me)
I had a few muscle cars in my formative years I'm really quite keen on a grown-ups version like the Vantage.
Thanks for the references, I'll do some reading while I wait for the right car to appear.

Sean the capacity increase is not really necessary, but, as you say, the one done by the factory to 6.3 litres is the accepted one. An original Vantage has more than enough power and is a vastly different car to drive than the standard AM V8. The ravages of time will see them needing new springs/shocks and rebuilt brakes to ensure they stop and handle properly. Once sorted they will happily cruise all day across Europe and pull 175 mph on the Autobahn when required.
