Did It. 350D - 650D

Well, after nearly 8 years and 30-something thousand photos, I've finally upgraded. To last year's model.

The 650D seems at an ideal price point - cheaper than the 700D without loosing many features at all to it. I wish I could justify the 70D, but even then I don't feel I'm loosing out that much with the 'pro-sumer' model.

And at the same time, I'm replacing the 17-85mm USM lens (which has been a solid, reliable and useful lens) with the newer 18-135 STM lens, which at the very least should help me get the most out of video modes.

It took 8 years because basically the 350d continues to be a great little camera, producing satisfying photos. As each new model came out, I'll confess the gadget freak in me hoped the old thing would break, but it just keeps on ticking. The thing that finally pushed me over the edge - we were going over old 30 second video snippets taken on our point and shoot on holiday, with the kids a few years younger. Those short little snippets captured so much about them that it seemed a really good idea to get some more.

Now, I can't wait for Christmas. Does anyone want a second hand Canon?

The 650D was my 40th birthday present to myself earlier in the year.

I'm very happy with the results so far, but I need a bit more time to fully explore the camera's potential.

After a 10 year absense from photography, the changes from 'old' film to digital are VERY scary!
Photoshop was hardly known the last time I dabbled with an SLR!

I've got a 400D that suits me just fine...will be interested in how you find the move.

I am a rank amateur, so don't really see the need to 'upgrade'

As someone else who can't afford the latest gadgets all the time, I can honestly recommend a 2nd hand 5D Mk1 - you need to 'drive' it more than the latest lightweight stuff, and it's got fewer FPS for motorsport etc.

But wow, what 'punch' to the images...

Do you have it yet or does it have to wait until Xmas?

Wondered how it was, and why you went for 650D instead of 600/700D. The 700D is almost the same price as the 650D, whereas the 600D can be had for a steal. Looking to buy one for someone as an upgrade from a 300D, so your situation is obviously quite similar.

Very true, it's a PITA that there are so many options with nothing that persuasive between them. That said, the recipient in this instance is best catered for by the x00D range.

On that note, the 70D is now about £250 cheaper than when I bought it.
I'm still happy with the camera and glad I didn't get an EOS-M instead - but yeah depreciation ouch!

I've just upgraded from a 300d, the 650d was recommended, but above what I wanted to pay, so got a 450d instead, cannot wait for delivery!
