I've always loved the look of the GTR, but find the enclosed cockpit a bit claustrophibic. My plan was always to simply remove the windows, but recently, it occurred to me that perhaps one could simply swap the GTR doors for the Can-Am doors, with the idea of creating an open-air cockpit while maintaining the look (and overhead rollcage) of the GTR. Does anyone know if the Can-Am doors would be a direct bolt-on? Obviously the GTR mirrors would have to be re-mounted, but this should be do-able. Thanks in advance!

Why not Fit the canam hinges on the gtr doors and mod the frame to suit your needs

You'd need to do a lot of work to the cockpit GRP body section, as the door hinges are different. The gas rams inside mount differently too. Because of the upward sweep of the Can Am door (rather than an outward arc), you might find that as the door opens up, it hits the A-pillar.

Assuming you resolve those problems, you'd then have to tidy up the door aperture on the bodywork as that would look very untidy exposed.

It's be a lot of work and if you wanted to go back to GTR doors at any point, you'd have to do a lot of fabrication to make both work in the same way somehow, so they could be swapped over.

Put the GTR doors with no windows. Easy, faster and cheaper.

Or cut the top off the GTR doors, the bit that holds the windows, then make good with a bit of fibre glass and paint!!

(I presume you're not being serious.... but just incase...) That would need a lot of work, the GTR has 2 hinges, one at the top of the door and one at the bottom. If you remove the one at the top, the single hinge at the bottom will be very weak & floppy! The Cam Am hinge is a 4-bolt affair (2-bolts at the bottom of the GTR door) to compensate for the lack of a top hinge.

I think removable windows are a much better idea.... maybe with some kind of quick-release fasteners?

Not so, the top hinge does not carry any weight, it is purely a "guide". The bottom hinge is more than capable of supporting what would be left of the door, but you probably wouldn't want to slam the door shut!

I agree with speedster... The hinge may take the weight but the door would move around a lot... Would be a nightmare to shut when your in the car.... Hence the canam hinge is the only real option IMO

Why not hinge the door along the bottom as in some sixties racing cars? You could integrate a step into it for the "more mature" owner.
(To avoid confusion; only the first part was serious)
