A friend of mine has just collected an SL55AMG - Says it is the Boll**x and would leave me in the distance!

Has anyone had any experiences against the merc? hopefully with a joyful tale to tell.

I Will have the chance to find out for myself once he has run it in, but would love to know in advance that the extra £60,000 he has paid was just for the badge!!!

Looking at the BHP/Ton figure he wouldn't have a chance. Difference of about 100BHP!

It's not "just for the badge". It's a bl**dy good car, to be fair. From experience, you'll spank it in a straight line, though.

I'm afraid he's in for a shock. An AMG 55 goes up the A20/M25 ramp every morning, and every morning I go up the same ramp in the Cerb. Probably one day a week I meet this guy at the lights on the roundabout and we race from a standing start to about 80-90. He gets left every time, and I'm not talking about a small amount. On the many occasions I've completely cocked up the first gear takeoff, I'm reeling him in by the end of second gear.
Its a very good car with a very good engine, but it lacks the simple appliance of physics.

OK from a standing start maybe , but from 100mph on wards i would not be so sure

Unless you got a good suspension setup and your tracking is spot on and traction is ample - those AL55AMG's get off the line pretty quick... but if you look at their dyno, you'll see that the power comes in slow... your torque spike should kill him between 40-120 easily - after that, your aerodynamics bugger it up for you.... my 3000GT gets up to 165 quicker than my cerb did from 120... of course on the local RAF runway....

up until 120 mph Cerb is faster, even a standard 1997 4.2. Trust me.

Between 120 and 155, I don't know, but presumably above 155 Cerb would be slightly faster, since it does not have an electronic limiter. And if the AMG is modified not to have the limiter, then we are in Cerber450's territory...

Only thing we've met so far which is def. faster is a 996 TT.

Sean.

Your car would go a lot faster if you washed it. (saw it at Joolz's). Must increase the drag a little.

Get Sian to clean it at the weekend

I dont know where you got that from - but you ever tried going from 155 to 180 in a cerb? count the seconds and let me know how long it took you - try it in a unlimited SL55 - it'll be a different story - the merc engine in that beast pulls level torque all the way up the rev range starting from around 2800rpm.... they might not have PTW where we definitely have an advantage - but that german engine knows how to get very quickly up close to the 2 tonne mark... I have yet to see any magazine post an accelerometer gyro proven 200+ speed in any TVR - although we all believe we have set the record at one time or another...

Cerbs loose there notable steam at around 120 - after that the pull is there - but you can feel it tapering off until you get to a point where you need a downslope to pull the extra few miles out of her... Aerodynamics is her enemy... but the SL55 has been well proven in the wind tunnel - and theres a shit load of tech data on the net about her engine abilities.... PTW gives you the advantage in acceleration in the low to mid range - but aerodynamics really comes into its own from the mid to top end IMO...

I guess - if TVR bothered to design a car that worked well at high speeds via "real" research and not computer simulations (if even that)... we would have an advantage that most manufacturers couldnt touch - we have the weight sorted - now its time that russian kingpin sorts the aerodynamics to 0.5% imperfection and handling to Ferrari Enzo level.... then once they have all the data - find some wierd and wonderful ways of being able to pass the fun on to us using cheap unreliable parts and diffusers that fly off at speed...

Do you mind, you two?! Tell the authorities to clean the roads - that car was clean when we left home! 170-odd miles later and that was the result. Blasted Labour government, it's all their fault!

Mick, I don't do the car cleaning thing.

Doesn't that invalidate the warranty? Must talk to Joolz...

Phoenix, I read you loud and clear on 120+ AMG SL55s abilities. My slightly specious argument was merely that if you de-limit the Merc to allow it to go beyond 155, you have modified it, and modified cars should be compared to modified cars, hence reference to Cerber450, or indeed, your missile, once it's got the big hole under the bonnet filled again.

check out any of the threads here:

www.pistonheads.com/gassing/forum.asp?f=133&h=0

assorted supercars, a 2mile runway, electronic speed recording equipment. need I say more. Have a look at one of the photo threads, you'll get the drift.

A think a Cerb will certainly be quicker than the Merc, although they are very rapid indeed. Reason I know the Cerb would win is that I've just about kept up with a SL55 in my Griff and there's no way I can compete with a Cerbera, which come to think of it is why I might consider buying one in the future!!

Cheers - Chris
