Bristol speed cameras to be turned back on
Discussion
Just seen this on the Beeb 6 o'clock news. Here we go again. The most worrying thing that interview with the chief Constable revealed a frightening lack of intelligence and intellect. How does such a dim wit get to this position. Anyway, he quoted a very tiny piece of the RAC foundation report, and he's going to cut accidents by 27%. I bet he's never even heard of regression to the mean. He's going to help cut killed and seriously injured by 800.
According to chief fuzz, they will be self funding. They're being brought back into action because 'they're there, so they might as well use them' They couldn't afford them if they had to buy them though. So, 'er, if they all happened to get set on fire, that would be the end of them! No funds to replace.

They've found some evidence that shows that on balance they probably work, but that evidence wasn't there when they switched them off?
Shouldn't he have been employed by Lloyds bank selling me a loan or ISA I didn't need?
The majority of speed cameras that I'm aware of have been superseded by bus lanes. So the traffic in general is at a standstill as opposed to speeding.Shouldn't he have been employed by Lloyds bank selling me a loan or ISA I didn't need?
Cynically, I believe this is more of an objective to cameras re placed into the 20mph zones
I've heard that the Council in Bristol seems to have an anti-car agenda. Isn't it all part and parcel of justifying tolling and other money making schemes?
The BBC News website reports that the Mayor was in some discussions with the police and their PCC before this decision was made, which may or may not indicate that it's about politics and making money.

The mayor is your stereotypical fold up bicycle riding, electric car owning, organic fairtrade lentil eating greenie:http://www.bristolpost.co.uk/Turning-speed-cameras...

Mayor George Ferguson wants to see a 'cultural change' on Bristol's roads with, inset right, 20mph limits for drivers, residents' parking zones and even the possibility of a congestion charge like London

Utter car hating 'tard...

You've just heard this? You can't be local! The BBC News website reports that the Mayor was in some discussions with the police and their PCC before this decision was made, which may or may not indicate that it's about politics and making money.
Bristol, the city who for years had a transport policy committee with representatives from all transport groups, cyclists, pedestrians, bus and train users, and absolutely no representation from .... yes you guessed it, car users!
Turning the cameras back on will save hundreds of lives, literally hundreds have died (peacefully in their sleep) whilst the cameras have been off, proof positive that cameras save lives.
To be serious, it's not an issue as you'd be lucky to get up to a speed where you could actually trigger an active camera in Bristol, and on the odd occasion you do everyone still brakes for the inert cameras.
"While the number of those killed or seriously injured on our roads has reduced recently there are still too many incidents, especially those involving pedestrians and cyclists," said Mr Ferguson.
- BBC story
He was later (not) quoted as saying:
"Well we just fancy doing it, no-one can stop us and we might make some money for the Xmas do and management pay-rises next year."

So no evidence whatsoever that turning his cameras back on will reduce anything or save anyone apart from him saying so???!!!
In fact the only evidence presented is that over the past two years of non-operation fatalities have fallen?!?!!??!
!?!?!!!???? Reasoning behind it is to protect cyclists/pedestrians?!?!?!?! Cameras are self-funding!??!?!!!!?
I repeat again !?!?!?!?!?

I know it's trivial in the grand scheme of things (and I don't live in Bristol) but I really f
g hate this planet sometimes. The only conclusion I can come to as has been alluded to already is that this continues the reputation of tax generation that scameras have become famous for. In fact they don't even really hide it any more.
I like this bit..
Bristol mayor George Ferguson said today: "We do need enforcement. We need to be able to deal with the idiots who drive ridiculously fast sometimes.
"A car is like a loaded weapon."
The guy is a f
king moron.
Mind you some of the comments are no better.

@KA12345 I'll state the even more obvious: the cameras will only raise money if people exceed the speed limit. If drivers obey the law, the cameras won't make any money, and the roads will be safer. The only problem is that the cameras are painted bright yellow and most drivers know where they are, and feel completely free to break the law anywhere else, endangering themselves and other road users. Surely we should be getting these dangerous criminals off our roads? If you don't want to pay the fine, don't do the crime.

Avon and Somerset police launch their own Speed Camera Amnesty?
Perhaps we should contact every council and offer £2 for each camera?
How much do you think Pitmansboots wants for his Xmas card list so we can offer to buy the decommissioned cameras before Somerset and Avon police?
You could probably weigh in the posts and the enclosures for more than that.
