I would like to buy a property in West Yorkshire and ideally I'd like to live in a village or very small town. I work in Halifax and therefore I'm looking for places to the West of Leeds - absolute maximum commute to Halifax should be 1 hour each way but preferably 30-45 minutes.

We'll be having kids in the next couple of years so I'd like somewhere with a primary school.

Any suggestions for idyllic little gems?

We moved to Marsden about 7 years ago, really enjoy living here, there are 2 schools in the village and a bus for secondary school which is in the next village, Halifax is about 20 minutes away.

a couple of views from our house

outskirts of Hebden Bridge.
very close by to you, Hebden is a very different kettle of fish to the chavness of Halifax. Try Midgley, Luddenden (village, not kershaw), Heptonstall. All have good schools.
next try Ripponden, or further up the hill to the more expensive Barkisland.

Essentially if you look on a map, you want the east or south east of Halifax. to the west/north is crap and close to bradford which is horrendous!
Know the area very well, name a place and i'll give an honest review.

edit: I got bored and drew a map.

Green=Good
Red=Bad

+1 for lovely place.

But a terrible commute. would take over an hour to get into Halifax in the rush hour surely?

Its not to bad as you can go over the hill at Slaithwaite to Outlane and work your way through.

Very useful map Efbe. Thanks!

I'm glad you didn't extend your map to the East. I'm concerned if I might currently be living in a red or green area!

Time to scan Rightmove.

Cheers

biggrin wasn't meaning to put down any areas!

Even in the red areas there will be nice bits, but honestly you want to go squarely for the green bits if you want to stay and start a life there.

I would personally pick an area that has a completely different identity to Halifax, as Halifax is and always has been a cesspit. go back to the 1600s and it had a poor reputation then. it has never lost it.

The 'Valleys' of Huddersfield are quite nice so Holmfirth and its surrounding areas are a good option e.g. Hepworth, Jackson Bridge, Holme etc. As already mentioned, slightly further out you've got Kirkburton, Highburton and Denby Dale which are also nice areas, all with very good schools!

Oi, I refute that little red splodge over Luddendenfoot - unless it's specifically Kershaw estate! Around the Calder valley I'd suggest Luddenden village, but it doesn't have a school, Midgley (last ofsted was outstanding and the school's just been renovated), Heptonstall, again a pretty much newly built school, and walking distance (steeply!) to Hebden Bridge. Colden is like a proper little hilltop farming village, with just a shop, a pub and a school, again a very good one. Have a look at Cragg Vale too, not so much a village as a valley road, but there's a couple of good pubs and the school is outstanding! (can you tell we're currently choosing schools for our 3 year olds for next year!)
