With no regards to MPG but otherwise reasonable running costs what's out there?

The insurance company gave the firm 1200 quid for our G reg. petrol Hilux that the pie keys nicked.

I'd have to be biased and say a nice SIII Landie (you mentioned nothing about comfort!) If it has to be civilised, I'd be looking at a decent 300TDi Disco, or a just-usable TD5.

Defender

Personally I'm on the lookout for a 130 and I've seen them sell for less than that in ropey condition.

Audi Allroad 2.7 V6 bi-turbo.

Sub 3k for a fully loaded car with decent miles. I've run one for 2.5 years. Sublime cruiser thanks to the air suspension and very capable off road.

This. If you just need a comfortable banger for the winter you could do worse than one of these. Smoke around in it for a bit, chuck it when the air suspension goes bang.

If you need a proper 4x4 then I would recommend a WJ Grand Cherokee. You would get a good one for that budget and apart from fuel mine is cheap to run and easy enough to fix should anything go wrong. Being American there are hundreds of articles on the interwebs to help you out should anything go amiss with easy fix guides.

Be rude not to get the V8 mind!!

Jimny. Brilliant off road, peanuts to run. But avoid if you plan long trips in one.

With MPG of no concern and with a limited budget I would get a petrol Jeep. Things like X5s, Audi allroads, Range Rovers that others suggested etc may well be bought for that kind of money but they will bankrupt you with repair costs in short order. A 4.7 Grand Cherokee would be absolutely perfect for your requirements and should be extremely reliable or the Jimny is also a good suggestion if you want something smaller.

Full or part time 4wd or full-on 4x4?

Crv/Hrv are fairly good value, though not a full on off roader. Mid to high 30's

Grand Vitara are another good bet.

Discos at this price would be a money pit and when I ran a TD5 I winced at the mpg and fuel cost.
