Hi,

After a 2nd hand defender - forgive my ignorance but can you explain what it means when its wax oiled - is it just a coat that stops rust? if its been wax oiled from new should it have no rust / corrosion? how often do you have to reapply it / how much approx? if its just been steam cleaned and wax oiled will it still corrode if there was rust there?

Thanks!

Waxoyl is a rust preventative coating which is usually sprayed on (but can be brushed) and can also be sprayed through drain hols etc (don't block them!) to protect the inside of box sections like the chassis.

Like just about any other process/material, it's never going to be 100% perfect. It can get scraped off, jet-washed off, parts could have been missed, it could have been applied wrongly/thinly, etc etc.

Summary? It's been around a very long time (I remember when it was Finnegan's!) so they must be doing something right but never accept it as "proof" of a perfect chassis nor is it a reason never to clean and check ever again. It'll help slow/prevent the rot but so will many other coatings.

cheers - if a chassis has it on though wont it be impossible to tell how rusty it is underneath? how often in general should it be applied?

some people use it to hide rust when they want to sell the car, its the same with bolting chequer plating on too...people sometimes do it to hide the rust.

Depends on who you talk to but anywhere from every 6mths to never!!! Personally, I just look at the state of the coating and reapply as necessary.

It's probably worth noting that once WaxOyl has been applied, it's horrible stuff if you need to work on something coated in it.

WaxOyl is great and I've found it does make a difference. I have a 1991 Discovery chassis that I've owned for 10 years or so. WaxOyled it often and it's never needed welding. Few D90's of this age can claim the same.

Yes it can be used to hide stuff, but so can a lot of other things, even paint. Best bet is just to use some common sense.

Also if applied correctly WaxOyl will sort of set and cure, but I reckon it takes about 3 months to reach this state.
