Yeah, he's a fking tool. I always read his letters on Saturday from old men who want to change their 18 year old Merc and he tell them to get a CRV, Fiat 500 or i10.

The best letters to him go something like this...

My [quality car] needs a new wheel bearing.

It's only done 20,000 miles but it's 8 years old.

Why won't the manufacturer pay ?....rage

Agreed tool. How he has hung onto the cushy telegraph gig for so long is anyone's guess.

Used to have a decent forum on his website years ago, until it mysteriously went down for several weeks - purging many of the regular contributors in the process.

Given the question, if it's real and not a plant, it's not a bad answer.

The person wants a diesel for an 80 mile commute. It doesn't say whether it's 80 mile each way or both ways.

The Kia will be economical, reliable and be covered by a warranty.

fair enough choice tbh

Having done an 80 mi commute on the M4 in the past I would want something as new as cheap as possible, looking at the spec it does that, I wouldn't want to spend that much on one tho!!

I love classics, having run them as my only cars, for boring motorway commutes I want the least money and hassle as possible

Those youngsters at auto express....

Does he work in a kia dealership loves a bit of kia rio 1.1 recommendation.

Dear Honest John,

I am looking for an exciting petrol vehicle, rear wheel drive for fast road weekend use and the occasional trackday. I have £15000 to spend. What would you recommend?

A Kia Rio biggrin

The Kia's

  • 7 year warranty, and
  • 88 mpg
make for some rather cost-effective motorway commuting.

I thought the forum was rubbish.

Heavy handed moderating, and dominated by a few old-timers who churned out a relentless stream of banal and cliched observations: "Mercs aren't as good as they used to be", "BMWs aren't as good as they used to be", "Audis are just badged-up VWs", "diesels are useless unless you do a gazillion miles a year" blah blah blah.

I do a 50 mile motorway commute (to work, then 50 miles back home) all completed in a honda civic 1.6...but it is the M25, so there is about 25 miles at NSL on a one-way trip and the rest is like being in town!

80 miles. 40 each way?

Well, I used to do 37 miles each way...............

in a Jimny!! biggrin

In hindsight, I should have kept my previous car, a 2001 Avensis 2.0 VVT-i.

It was comfortable (being the CDX with leather and all the toys), reliable, and extremely efficient for a 2.0 petrol, averaging 45+mpg for the week.

That really was economical motoring smile

But if you look on his website, there is a "Real MPG" section where the Kia Rio 1.1 only achieves 77% of the claimed mpg on average.
