Very, very few cars will get a real world 54mpg. Even fewer are available at £1,560.

You might just about squeeze into an early modern Polo tdi, but that's about it if you want mid 50's mpg. Maybe a 205 / 106 / 306 tdi...

I managed to average 73mpg in a 1.6 Skoda Fabia over 10 days recently. Which included a daily drive to work during the afternoon school run. Even then I managed to keep it well over 54mpg each day and by driving like an old man on M - ways the instant was staying well above 80.
