Best in Budget

I was pondering this at a set of roadworks on the way home this evening and have no idea whether it has already been done, however.

At a set budget - ie. 1k, 2k, 10k, 400k etc, what would be your personal choice for the best vehicle available for your budget? Would you spend a grand on a wafty old 7 series or a 306 TD for cost cutting? Would 10,000 buy you a brand new Kia or an aging Jaguar?

At a grand I've never been particularly fussy whatever it is.
£10k I'd definitely take the sportier/luxury option over a new blandbox

My mind changes so often I have no idea. I'm looking at up to £5k next car and been looking at everything from a small van to Jag XKs
