M Class Ownership - Experiences?

General Q really, thinking of chopping from a 335d Touring M Sport to an M Class next year. I was looking at a 2010 plate 320 CDI but to be honest, I know absolutely sod all about MBs, model variants and such like. Anyone here own one and can share experiences; good bad or indifferent? Cheers.
Had a bad experience with mine ,lots of niggly faults which were very expensive to repair .
Had a bash in it which I would have avoided in a lighter car probably ,parts ultra expensive.
Might be alright with low miles but when ours hit 60k it seemed every week something else went wrong.
enjoyed the drive part although nowhere near as good as the x5 or cayenne ,but overall an unimpressive ownership experience.

Predictably hear differing stories about comparisons with XC90, X5 etc but then that will always happen. To be honest, I'm quite happy with the 3er but me and the Doris were in Brooklands MB World last weekend and she spotted the ML and started getting all excited so just looking around and seeing what people's experiences are really. I'm not immune to big 4x4s, just not sure I'm psychologically ready for one yet!
Having owned the X5,Land and Range rovers as well as previous Ml,the new model Ml350 Sport was an easy decision .It is easily the best of the bunch,it does everything the rest do only better !Cant get a anywhere near the claimed economy ,but then,who does .A friend has the 250 and that is very economical and not that noticably less powerfull .
You chaps obviously have the new new model, how does it compare to a 2010 model do you think? When I get some spare time after Christams I'm going to leg it back down to Brooklands (it's only a couple of miles away) and have a spin in one but still interested to hear people's views as it would seem that MB is not always first on the list for 4x4 and you certainly don't see as many on the road compared to an X5 for example.
I bought a 58 reg ML500 with 22k miles as an approved used car almost two years ago, so same sort of age then as you are looking at now. All in all, although my wife likes it which is what matters as it's her that drives it, I'm not particularly impressed. It's a dragster in a straight line, but poor in the corners and has terrible throttle response when lifting off. We have had over 5k of warranty claims. There was a slight facelift in 09 which is worth having. Next time we'll get a new model diesel or a RR TDV8.

I would also add, that unless your wife really hankers after the high driving position or you need the extra space, your 335d would be infinitely better to drive, so don't give it up easily unless you've got another car to play with. I would rather have a big estate such as a 535d than most SUVs.

Funny you should say that, I was barrelling back on the M40 from Oxford to London late last night and I had a moment of 'I really like this car (alright it's a diesel, I know) it does virtually everything I want it to do and I'm not absolutely sure I want to get rid of it.' I've had it since new and I'm a bit attached to it to be honest and I could quite happily own it for another four years. I think my wife just likes the look and feel of a big truck (as she calls it) and although I had a V8 RR in a moment of madness many years ago I'm not terribly fussed about having one. There's nothing wrong with them of course, I just don't really need one. The extra space would be handy though, we regularly do long-haul trips across and down to SE Europe so extra space for dog and associated admin would be useful!

The ML is probably not the first choice for a big suv,The x5 is everywhere and so the default choice for most people.Once you try The new ML youll be hooked,i know critics bang on about the X5 being a better car ,but do they actually go out and buy one for themselves ?Drive an x5 and your just joining the flock,go on be an individual,you wont regret it ,and MB custmer service is second to none,beleive me ive tried them all .
We have a 2010 Ml350cdi which was bought new, its a decent family bus, more car like than the Q7 S line but not as good as the comparable X5.
its ok, the gearbox can be slow at junctions and the MPG is pretty poor, particularly short town runs where we get circa 21-24 its quick enough though..
on a run best ever mpg is 36 but that was straight A roads.
The deals were so much better compared to the other German stuff when we bought, but then that's reflected to an extent in the residuals. We looked at the new ML but its FUGLY in our opinion, park the facelift sport next to the new version and the older one is by far the better car.
