Was ok up to the point where someone suggests mandatory prosecution for every motorist in collision with a bicycle. Wonder how this would work if a cyclist hits a stationery car?

Well it would be the drivers fault for stopping or being parked

Clearly blaming the motorist in EVERY situation is wrong! And would potentially lead to the increase of insurance fraud cases.

Got to laugh at the compulsory HiVi kit. Writer complains about black being worn during the DAY. Shall we ban black cars in daytime as well? laugh (At night is different story. Lights ARE compulsory but too many dheads don't pay the £10 it costs for a front and rear unit! They should be fined IMO!

Quite like the idea about VED. Does seem to be too many of the "I pay Road tax/VED therefore I have more right to the road than anyone else" Calling it "Emmisions Tax" would give it a different slant (Smog Tax in California seems to work)

After dark, hi vis and lights should be compulsory. The amount of people I see riding on the roads in the dark in London with no lights or reflective clothing is ridiculous.

Another thing I'd ban immediately is cycling with headphone in. It's dangerous. Cyclists keep saying how vulnerable they are but few of them actually do anything about it when they're riding.

Helmets should be worn. Cyclists who ride down the nearside of lorries before left turns are just stupid and can't get away with blaming others all the time.

One last thing, cyclists who completely disregard the rules of the road should be prosecuted.

He's left a zero off - £200+ so obviously doesn't know what he's talking about.

Yeah, travelling office-goods salesmen won't be happy with this idea.

VED = Vehicular Execution Duty. Makes sense.

or a pedestrian?

My father had a very close shave with a cyclist on the pavement in town a few weeks ago.

Police interest < Zero.

yes This is why VED goes up every year, to encourage us motorists to hit more hippys on bikes. Also the higher the VED you pay the more cyclists you are required to mow down in a frenzied orgy of twisted cycle frames, broken bones and torn flesh/lycra.

For the hard of thinking this is a tongue in cheek post and in no way reflects the views of all motorists, Pistonheads or my mums Bull Terrier

What, this one?

Al on the road said:
Why do people on bikes think that black is an appropriate colour to wear on the road? In my experience as a car driver, about 50% of them, in all weathers, all times of day (or night) and regardless of their behaviour or absence of other illumination, seem to think that wearing black is just fine. The other half are lit up like a Christmas tree - lights (working), fluorescent jacket, helmet light etc. If cyclists who made no effort to be seen had their bikes confiscated, it would make the rest of them think - and make the roads safer for everyone.
That's not quite the same thing, is it?

And your banning black car analogy is even better. Presumably in your world at dusk each day, when the driver turns on his 200W+ of lights, the cyclist pops into Evans to buy some lights and a change of outfit?

Not sure why that poster felt it makes ANY difference in DAYTIME what a cyclist wears. laugh

I then pointed out that when it's dark is a different matter and visability is important. So wuite why you get all rollyeyes just tells me you're numpty.

Because he is going to be dressed the same on his return journey, you plank. Just as the black car will still be black but with lights on.

Obvious which of us can read, really. hehe

Prove it. Prove a bike rider out in daytime will be coming home at night. It didn't say that in the article. It doesn't always follow anyway.

More to the point though. At night if cyclist is wearing black clothes but has their lights on. Where's the problem? THEY HAVE LIGHTS ON. So they should be visible to other road users. Like my example of the black car with lights on. confused

Seem you are just another PH "Hero" who hates cyclists with some kind of venom and wants to insist they know what's good for them rolleyes

Lights are widely available for bikes you know.

If I turn on the headlight on my bike on a pitch black night and cycled towards you, you wouldn't have a clue what colour clothes I was wearing. Fluro colours only make a difference at dusk or in very cloudy conditions. In bright sunlight or in the dark, they make no difference.

Lights after dark ARE compulsory. The fact that some cyclists don't use them is an enforcement issue, not a problem with the law itself. If police carried with them some basic bike likes, and forced unlit cyclists to buy them for say £30 if stopped without lights, you'd have an effective fine system that would also assist the unlit cyclist. Win-win.

But you're wrong about high-viz. I wouldn't want anyone to insist I painted by car bright orange because they claimed they couldn't see it. It's a slippery slope to stupidity.

So you drive your car with the windows down and radio off do you? If not, you're a hypocrite. For what it's worth, I wouldn't cycle with headphones in, but I reserve the right to ride a bike if I ever go deaf.

So helmets protect you from being hit by trucks do they? Of course it's madness to cycle up the left of a lorry at a junction, but you have to remember that lorries and buses also make half-baked passes before turning left too. It happens a LOT.

Agree. As should car and lorry drivers. Just don't go doing 71mph on the motorway, OK?

It really is regrettable that there is such a schism between cyclists and motorists. There are stupid cyclists and there are stupid motorists, there are exceptionally observant and courteous people who both drive and cycle. There will always be problems on account of the former but turning it into a war is bad for both sides and totally ridiculous.
