I'm hoping someone can save me from a suddenly dead laptop running under Windows ME.

Starting up one morning I got: "...the following file is missing or corrupted..."

I tried loading with the rescue disk, but I can't even load any of the menu items presented, i.e. Help, Start with CD, Start without CD, Minimum boot. The thing just freezes after choosing any option.

If I Alt F5 at that stage to get the command prompt, I can't make it do anything (like copy system files from the rescue disk to the c: drive). Trying to get safe mode just freezes it also.

I can't get it to recognise the CD drive (d:). (As I thought my only option may be to reinstall ME.)

Help!!! I'm now beyond my "expertise" and I'd be really grateful for advise (not yet close to putting a hammer to it, maybe new hard disk though!). Just getting a D: prompt may be the way to go, but I don't know how.

Thanks to both of you, I'll try the above link first then if that fails, I'll swap memory sticks.
