What car for under £2800???
Discussion
Afternoon,
My Sisters Fiat Punto has suffered another head gasket failure and I am refusing to fix it this time. It has a new one every 7-8 months and I reckon the block must be warped to keep causing this. She has admitted defeat and told me she can afford to spend up to £2800. She doesnt want anything too boring but keeping in mind she is only 20 the cost of insurance is still a factor. We have spent all of today driving around looking at Mini's but to be honest around this sort of price range they are utter crap!
Can I have some suggestions of decent, reliable cars for around that sort of budget?
Cheers,
Sammo

Or continuing the Toyota theme, an Aygo.
We've had one for a few years. Cheap as chips to run, faultlessly reliable, looks decent enough in metallic grey.
Ours is a four door sport version, an '07 reg with 40k on the clock. It has central locking, aircon, alloys and electric windows. Probably worth £3.5k tops so there's bound to be a slightly older one with fewer bits and more miles at the budget.

Not sure if she'd be particularly keen on this, but I'll give it a shot!

I paid £2900 for this a week ago, although you can still get a nice one for less
I'm also 20 and my insurance will be about £1000 at renewal in Jan - It's comfortable, and practical (to some extent!) and a bit different to a hatchback!

Eynsford village?
Get the Punto head done or a replacement motor. Same thing happened to a guy that works with me, the car does about 40k between gaskets but the last time he got the head skimmed and it runs well now. Its on around 120k now.
£2800 will put you right back in the ballpark for another potential money pit of youre not careful.
Go Japanese, Toyota/Honda
Best ones to go for are boring base models with low mileages. I ran an old civic 5 door for a year that had 2 owners and 28k on the clock. Needed about £100 spending on replacing brake cylinders as they were stuck after sitting for so long - paid £1200 for it. Reliable and cheap and leaves cash in the pot for repairs or insurance. Sold if for what I paid for it a year later. Went out and bought a similar albeit the estate version and again sold it for what I paid.
Do a search on Autotrader for cars under £2k and 30/40k. Check they ARE low mileage and not some scrote putting 0 or knocking a number off the end...
