Eric Clapton

A highly respected guitarist who has been around forever - but I have to say I find him a bit boring and maybe not as good as his reputation suggests.

That said I admit I haven't listened to all of his works - due to the sheer amount and obviously due to the fact I haven't found most of it interesting.

That being said, every now and again I will hear a song which has a nice rock type solo in it.

So can anyone recommend similar songs to the ones below?

I am aware of the very popular songs like Layla, Crossroad, White Room etc But not so much other stuff from his bands or solo career.

I've had the same feelings about Clapton, never been a fan, never liked him as much as the Rock n Roll guitarists that were around before him, and when the likes of Green came along I can see why he was overshadowed massively.

Laylas a good lick though, and I need to give cream another listen as I've heard a lot of musicians I like noting cream as rather good.

Quite good early 70's, turning dodgier as the decade wore on.

If you can find it online, he did a brilliant concert in Central Park with Stevie Winwood. Brilliant musicianship from both as well as the backing band.

I do agree that he was at his best in the 60s though

Try the "Layla and other Assorted Love Songs" album by Derek and the Dominos. Stand out tracks being "Key to the Highway" and "Have You Ever Loved a Woman".

His solo stuff is a bit hit and miss. His Unplugged album is worth a listen, and for a broad range of his styles perhaps look at 24 Nights, which was a run at the Albert Hall and goes from a rock band, to a blues band and finishes with an Orchestral Band.

There's some good stuff on YouTube as well, try looking for "Run Baby Run" with Sheryl Crow, "Holy Mother" with Pavarotti. For a rare occurrence of Clapton messing up, check out Further On Up the Road from "The Last Waltz", which shows how good Robbie Robertson of The Band is...

Apart from the old classic stuff and Unplugged, I also like the Behind the Sun and August albums - IMO, there are enough good songs on those 2 albums to justify buying them. I've found his subsequent albums to be very patchy.

Funnily enough, I saw Derek and The Dominos at the Glasgow Apollo in 1971.

I thought the support band - Brett Marvin and the Thunderbolts (aka Terry Dactyl and the Dinosaurs) were better. Disappointed I was. having grown up in the 'Clapton is God' era, I was expecting wonderful things.

Ah. I wasn't for one minute suggesting that Clapton's best work was generally with the Dominos, just that it was on the recording I mention. Honestly, the Fillmore sets are astonishing. I cannot emphasise that enough.
