I brought a car last week that needed an Mot, so booked it in and it past but a mileage dicrepancy showed up in 2010 150k when it says 81k on the clock presently. Now I have all the old Mots back to 2005 and the mileage all looks fine and genuine showing a few thousand increased miles each year to present 81k.
But the car has had several personal number plates over the years. The lastest 2009-2011 thats now fitted to a BMW that I found out on a DVLA check, so my question could this 150k mileage discrepancy just be down to the car being on a personal plate thats now fitted to another vehicle that has done 150k?

What was the mileage in 2009 and 2011 ?

My car's previous MOTs show 11,710 in 2010 which was definitely 117,100 hehe

I doubt it's linked to private plates because the VIN and make/model also show on a MOT certificate.

Similar scenario with my van purchased this time last year with a mileage discrepancy on the MOT. I immediately contacted the vendor. He'd taken it in part-ex and was obvious he couldn't have clocked it. To say he was livid was an understatement! Felt a bit sorry for the guy and as the van was highish mileage and in good order I negotiated some money back.

Sorry that doesn't really answer your question does it! Have you cross referenced with the service history, does it tally? Any pages missing? Could the service book have been replaced to cover tracks?

The mileage is what the tester puts in, human error?

Incidentally I have a slight concern as mine has switchable km-miles and I had an mot done showing KM, so the tester just included the KM value but there seems to be nothing that states "km" on the test result page. So from 60k I am now at 100k but will be back to 60+something k this summer.

Check the actual MOT history here http://www.motinfo.gov.uk/ if you are concerned about the legitimacy of the history you have - use the V5 document reference number to look it up.

Wait for the OP's answer first, he might have got it right...

Are those figures from the paperwork you have or from http://www.motinfo.gov.uk/ ?

It's entirely possible you have fake service history / previous MOT certificates.

I'm sniggering at this. My brother bought a deisel 5 series from a guy in Leeds fitting this description. It had blacked out windows and, yup, it had been clocked... On the plus side, the 'trader' now resides in one of her Magistees residence.

I don't know how anyone can only do 2k - 3k miles a year, was that change of owner from 08?

Lots of people only do that sort of mileage, particularly on a car like that.

Check the service history milages make sence in relation to the MOT mileage, as unless they did regular mileage trims or did a Service and MOT on the same day the mileages would be out of sync. I would ignore the MOT mileage unless the car feels like it has covered that mileage.

The mileage and dates do all check out in the service book at mercedes which is stamped I will check the online mot statuses for each mot later when I get home. I wouldnt say the car feels like its done that mileage. And if it has been clocked they have gone to a lot of trouble to get another service book and stamp it up at mercedes.

Far from it, as a frequent purchaser of cars I have experience in these matters!

I gave up buying cars from certain areas of the country as it was far too frequently going to be a wasted journey. The reason I mention the far easterners is many cars get driven back & fourth to their homelands clocking up many thousands of miles in short periods & they are rather adept at all things technical.

PS I'm married to someone from what was the eastern block wink

Check the online MOT mileages. If it has Mercedes main dealer service history you can check this with Mercedes as they keep a central record. If it all ties up it points to a MOT entry error.

The only thing I don't understand is why it would be different on the computer to the paperwork so it does warrant a check.

Does the mileage history on the new style certificate only show MOTs that the car has passed?

The one I referred to earlier that was an obvious mistake was a fail and was rectified during the retest.
