Giving up smoking.
Discussion
She has always smoked a little and from what I read on here that's very common. However last week she started to smoke more than usual. I stuck some Nicorette patches under the arches but this made no difference and on closer inspection I found there to be oil in the breather hose from the top of the catch tank. This was sucking oily/airy vapor through the turbo and probably why she (and most others) smoke a little.
Even without the build up in the hose, the standard set up is to vent the catch tank through the turbo. The catch tank is never going to be 100% efficient at catching and condensing oil vapor. So left "as is", some oily vapor is going to go back through the system? I am no turbo expert but this can't be great for which ever turbo you are venting into, as the oil will build up and burn, increasing temperature and pressure. This maybe contributing to why so many seem to require rebuilds despite being rated for the power.
I changed my set up to vent to atmosphere with a filter on top of the tank. Drove 100 miles yesterday and nothing came out the exhaust, zilch. So I'm very happy. I'm changing my tank for a pro alloy unit this week but will run the same set up.
If anyone else wants to give up smoking, I highly recommend it!

This is going to sound stupid, but do you have to drain the oil to change the breather catch tank? Ive just relocated my filters to the bulkhead and extended the hose, but I would like to change it to a pro alloy one.
Cheers
Steve
nope, although its common for the stock on to be full of oil and crud hence changing to the upgraded one.... in truth the stock one is fine if you use the car every day, its only if its an occasional weekend toy that it fills up etc.Cheers
