How long before this goes wrong?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-25398499

So I buy a car. Go on line and insure it, get cover note by e-mail. Pop down post office to tax it. Will the new insurance be on the database and/or will the post office accept my e-mail cover note?

If it's taxed from the minute you do it online then I'm all for it.

The less time I have to spend in the hell holes of the UK that are our Post Offices the better. Cars appear on MID pretty quick. MoT is all up online too. It's just the TAX left.

I'll miss the disc though.

I imagine it will show up almost instantly. Also means you wont have to pop down the post office. Insure online, then tax online.

Cut and paste from BBC web site
"In addition, motorists will only need to tell DVLA once when they declare their vehicle off the road. Currently, motorists who make a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) have to renew it every year."

Considering how inefficient and how many mistakes the DVLA make (combined with the usual attitude of if we (DVLA) make a mistake its you (the motorist's) problem to sort out and if you (the motorist) make a mistake its your problem to sort out). I cant really see the telling the DVLA once its sorn is going to work, added to the fact it going to be more open to abuse.

I'm all for sorting making the tax application simpler, but I would personally start with sorting the mess of the DVLA as a whole.

Just my opinion, from someone that has experienced more than a few mistake and lies by the DVLA.
