Firewire connections

Techy question.
I've got a Dell Inspiration 2400 with USB2 connections, is it possible to add some sort of board so I can use a firewire connection.
Having problems with Maxtor 160 Ex HDD and video rendering and suggestion is its because Im not using a wirewire connection.
Any thoughts or advice.

Snap! I've got a Firewire PCMCIA card for my Dell Inspiron, originally bought for video capture but also comes in handy to connect the Maxtor external drive.

Shows Im no PC techy, mine a Dimension 2400, dont think that matters, so can I add a firewire PCMIA card to my PC.

You need a PCI Firewire card. They're dog cheap now.

Actually, tell us more about what it is you're trying to do, and whats happening, because if the external HDD doesnt have a firewire port, you can't attach it with firewire..

USB2 is quicker than Firewire400 - what are you trying to do and what problems are you having?

This is the problem,

Message on blue screen, during rendering DVD film.

"A problem has been detected and windows has shut down to prevent damage to your computer. Check adequate disk space, if a driver is indicated check for bios updates, disable bois memory options such as shadowing or caching"

Starting dump of physical memory.

Computer is Dell Dimension2400 2.4 Ram is 1Gb, onboard 80Gb HD external HD Maxtor 160Gb

Films capture ok, edit ok, when making movie starts rendering process (about 3 hrs as file 28Gb) finishes first process then starts second process to check convertion for errors, at anytime in this phase or 1st phase above message appears.

Disc scan and defrag ok, drives updated from Dell.

Also had computer dump memory and error message "not enough memory in volume H 1,2,or 3, H drive is the external HD, this is only got 42Gb used and 110Gb free. I have uninstalled windows XP and editing software and carried out reinstall. SP2 does not like Pinnacle studio 9 so have not installed it.

The software and capture board are Pinnacle Studio 9, lastest updates, on Pinnacle forum others seem to have same problem,and general feeling is its possible use of USB2 and not firewire could be cause.

Captures and burns up to 45 minutes work fine.

Had this problem for 3 months and its p-ssing me off so any advice would be good.

Sounds like you need more memory. I know 1Gb is a fair amount, but video editing eats it!

Also probably need to increase the virtual memory cache, preferably locate it on a separate, fast HDD.

Dont know about memory as people are doing twice the size projects on 1/2 my PC spec.

Interesting thought of virtual memory, is this an easy task to carry out, for a total non tekki, or is it a call a man who knows jobby.

Switching to firewire avoids using the MXOFX.sys driver which is why people are saying it fixes it, nothing to do with speed, just a flaky driver.

Thanks for advise, Im going to invest in a PCMIA card and try firewire, will post results soon.

Are you sure you mean PCMCIA? They are for laptops, if your machine is a desktop which I think it is, you need a PCI card.
