There were practical reasons for doing that, the estate had better aerodynamcs than the saloon.

March 701 (I think?). The one with what looks like a tea tray/Sky dish strapped to its nose. Very bizzare looking car.

Rover-BRM 2-shaft gas turbine this is the 1965 car driven at Le Mans by Graham Hill & Jackie Stewart it finnished 10th ,driven here by Ron Whitehead.

The March and Williams six wheelers were built with very different effects in mind compared to the Tyrrell. The Tyrrell was designed to reduce frontal area and "hide" the wheels behind the nose spoiler. The March and Williams designs aimed to improve air flow through the sidepods to improve undercar aerodynamics and increase downforce.
