Royally hacked off.

After a miserable day at work I arrive home to be greeted by the sight of a parking ticket on my car this evening.

Admittedly I was parking across a bay, but in my street its commonplace to do that in the corners due to the ridiculous layout of the road and the bays.

Basically the road is a square "n" shape with the top left and top right corners pretty much at right angles.
The bays run down the edge of the road on the outside only. All permit parking, I have a permit, clearly displayed.

Last night I had to park almost in the corner of one of the bays (tried to post a diagram but didn't work). Basically if you can imagine cars all in a line along the top of the 'n' and then one parked right in the top right corner, which I was then parked parallel to (like the below but in reverse)

C - M - CAR - CAR - CAR
A - E
R

Anyway, my car is parked in a position which does not impede access to/from any other cars, to/from any of the bays or the flow of traffic around the road.

Basically I know I'm not 100% in the bay (about 50% actually), but if I wasn't you couldn't have parked a SMART car in the gap anyway. I was not in anyone's way at all.

This is a blatant example of my local council's cash-machines punishing a paid-up local resident for crap parking provision outside their own house.

I'm very aggrieved, I find it grossly unfair and I would dearly like not to have to contribute yet more money to the shower of sh!te at the Town Hall.

Can anyone offer any advice based on experience or am I just going to have to chalk this one down and keep my eyes open for warden TW117 and give them a piece of my very vocal mind?

If its permit parking, I presume somebody was parked in your space?

MMmmh! Probably due to someone taking a new recruit out to patrol the area, AND get their "first" tickets of their career. Common practice I'm afraid!

I have found a lack of Parking Ticket Web sites but there is a site that will fight your case for a fixed fee. they claim to have a 65% or something success.

I guess though illegally parked is illegally parked.

Good luck!

Here's a diagram:

Fight it, if only to p1ss them off mate. If you see another scum bag in Tun Wells giving a ticket, and he's NOT taking a photo, then just go and say it was within the lines.

Or measure the bay, if it's under the legal min (which I forget, it was in Sun Times a few weeks back) then tell them to p1ss off.

Edited to adjust my rubbish picture!

in the diagram, are you not blocking the car on the right?

that's my rubbish diagram, I'll edit it now. I've seen it done with a half mile long Mercedes, and it allows all the parked cars to get in and out.

AND it means you can park more cars there, because the road is so wide at the corner.

Simple money making, plain and simple.

Exactly what I was thinking, but I've seen lots more parking scum taking a digital photo of the car, in situ, with the ticket on. They use that enormous plastic gadget, that writes the ticket also (they carry it holstered on their bat utility belts).

Sworks, I would phone the scum, politely ask for a photo of the offence as you can't remember being outside of the lines If they don't have one, tell them to go jump.

I hate all this permit parking limits and stuff you have in london! But considering the number of cars you have per mile of tarmac, its inevitable I suppose.

The japs have a taxation based on car length, which is why you see some incredibly short jap cars...

To 'explain' the ticket in this scenario - your parking has no control over the other cars, i.e. at any point, the gap in front of car on right, could be eaten by the arrival/replacement of the car below it, thus blocking him in.

As such you *may* create a block. As such a ticket is served.

Sorry, It sucks, but I don't make the rules...

I can see what you're saying mate but if you saw the reality of it you'd know there's no way on earth I'd block in anything that could fit in the space... I know this because I and my neighbours regularly park in this way (we all agree it makes sense) and have been ignored by the council when proposing changes to the bays.

Basically, as Raify notes, this is another fing scam from Tunbridge Wells SCUM Borough Council.

If I'm forced to pay you can be sure I will get my £30 worth out of them in other ways.

Also I think they have to release the photograph under the data protection act maybe? Could be very wrong but its data pertaining to a case against you and therefore i think you have rights to this data or at least the knowledge of the existance of this data...

Hopefully anyway

near me, a street with limited parking, but a wide road, chose to agree together to park "sideways"

rear wheel on the kerb, pointing forward.
way more cars get in, and the council seem to have "accepted" it.

Just an idea.

Then the were the street that decided the grass patch would be perfect, group paid a "man" to dig it all up, tarmac it and convert it to parking spaces over the weekend...
council whinged but couldn't really do anything...

Well here goes...

S Works letter to the scummers said:

Dear Sir or Madam,

Re: Penalty Charge Notice No. XXXXXXXX, Vehicle Registration: XXXX XXX

The above parking notice was issued to my vehicle on Wednesday 10 November.

I wish to appeal against the Penalty Charge and request that you please provide the following to my home address so that I can write you a fully comprehensive appeal letter:

a) Photographic evidence of the alleged offence.
b) A detailed explanation from traffic warden XXXX as to why the Penalty Charge Notice was issued, specifically noting how the alleged offence was causing a problem which warranted the issuance of a Penalty Charge.

I understand that (under the terms of the Penalty Charge Notice) since I am appealing in writing within the 14 day period the maximum that I will have to pay should my appeal not be successful, will be £30.00.

If this is not correct, please contact me and advise me to the contrary before the 23rd of November 2004, the day before the reduced rate expires.

Fingers crossed.....

A full sized firetruck could get passed. Funnily enough, the other day some twt parked on the other side of the corner, on double yellows forcing an ambulance to reverse right back down the road.

Unfortunately, Traffic 'officer' 117 wasn't around for that one

Can't be everywhere all the time.....

Either pay up or fight the ticket is the answer....if you win, you pay nothing. If you lose you pay more.....

I say fight it, just to annoy them. You might not win, but you'll gain some (petty) satisfaction

I had a similar problem a while ago where I was sticking out of a bay.

I sent a part grovelling letter explaining the situation and they let me off.

I can email you the letter if you like, let me know...

Matt.

Why were you sticking out of a bay? Are you a PDLH?
