connecting guitar to ipad

whats the best way to connect an electric guitar to an ipad (for garage band). I see there are a couple of options - the apogee jam from the apple store, seems quite expensive compared to iRig and peavey devices

Griffin do the Guitar Connect cable for around £20. (Available from Apple Stores and no doubt the internet in general)
Connects to your guitar, plugs into the headphone socket on the ipad and has an additional socket for heaphones.
I use this with a Uke with undersaddle piezo pick up, without a pre-amp, works fine.
The other devices you mention, iirc, connect via the 30 pin socket, which provides better audio than through the headphone socket, which may be why they cost more, however, the Griffin cable has been fine for my needs.

Another benefit with using the headphone socket is that you have compatability with any device as they all have headphone sockets, the 30 pin dock socket has now been discontinued.

I use the Apogee Jam which works really well. It comes with cables for both the 30 pin and the smaller lightning connector. Not cheap, but works great!

I too use the Apogee Jam, but you do need to be careful with the level setting on it if your guitar has powerful pickups. The Les Paul needs it turning down a fair way, and the active circuit on my Clapton Strat is too much for it. Pushing it harder just makes it clip rather than inducing the simulated amp to overdrive.
