Reading a few threads on PH (particularly the winter tyres thread) I'm surprised at how many drivers seem to lose grip/traction on a regular basis. I like to think I drive fairly spiritedly when circumstances allow, I get to drive a wide range of cars (from 63bhp Micras up to 230bhp BMWs) and in over 20 years of driving I've lost grip once (travelling @4mph downhill on sheet ice).

Do people deliberately drive close to the limit or is it simply poor assessment of road conditions?

When was the last time you skidded and why?

Unless I'm misunderstanding what you are saying, then I'm going to say very regularly indeed.

Ive broken traction under acceleration a few times in the last 2 years.
Some people on here to tend to post as though they go every where sideways.
Perhaps they do. Who knows? This is a car forum after all, and as long as they arent crashing into stuff and putting the public at danger with their sideways antics then it doesnt bother me, personally.

Even when i had my S Type R, it took some serious ham-footed-ness to break traction in a straight line, even in the wet.

So in 20 years driving you have never wheel spun away on a wet roundabout not getting going as quick as you planned?

Are you honestly saying you have never got a small amount of wheel spin coming out of a slippery junction? Never deliberately hooned out of a junction lighting up the rears giving it way more power than needed? Or maybe locked a wheel or 4, driving a car with no ABS. Thrown a car about a bit on an empty gravel car park? Tried the emergency change of direction handle when no one was looking? Gone silly in a snowy car park?

Obviously I have never done any of these, ever, oh look my Brake membership pack has arrived!

A full tank of V-power gives you a few temporary extra ponies of course, so i nailed it out of the Shell garage tonight slightly sideways onto the dual carriageway, greasy tyres aiding my progress. All with nobody around of course.

50% of the time I go out... I like enthusiastic pull offs or or a bit of enthusiastic cornering.

Nothing spectacular just enjoying a portion of the potential my car has smile

This evening, I was a bit angry when leaving work and did a wheel spin. Before that it was this morning going to work, it was icy and I was late.

Far too often, any quiet open sighted corner/roundabout when the situation allows.

Th car isn't massively powered either, 286bhp & 300lb/ft wt last dyno run (had manifold and turbo back 3" since then) but the car lends itself to it quite well. Will spin up third if it's ever so slightly damp.

This time of year near enough every time I touch the throttle. It's a lot of fun.

Even got the Mrs Quattro sliding about.

When I had my MR2, pretty much every day on my way home from work at the same roundabout.

Now in the Focus, I merrier under steer my way around the same roundabout laughing at the crap grip and hilarious squealing of my "Mohawk" front tyres.

On the bike, it's less so. Last time was laying black lines in the middle of summer on a trackday. Rear was just starting to spin.

Pretty much every single journey. My cars all want to be driven quickly and respond accordingly.

Lift off oversteer, under steer, power oversteer...all for the taking. And bloody wonderful it is too.

In my S2000 I could lose grip whenever I wanted.
My jeep is the same.

There's a big difference between deliberately putting the back end out vs accidentally losing it.

Almost every day...for hours.

On the drive to work yesterday I was cornering at about 1g, lifted off the throttle...the balance of the car shifted..no opposite lock required. Not really losing grip, but great fun.

Got to work. After an hour of prep, I spent the next 7 hours sliding around, doing tyre tests. Losing grip? Yes.

Leave work, messing with the balance of the car on the way home...it never gets boring.

Happened to me in a 330i the other day, backend slid out when joining a dual carriageway from a roundabout.
Was only doing about 20/25, DSC came on to try and gain the traction and ended up fishtailing slightly.
Shat myself is an understatement.
