I guess this should go on the first world problems thread, but here goes.

I want a new Audi, but want sports seats. The only way to get that is by paying an extra £1,200 for the 'Sports' package which comes with 17" alloys (which I don't want), stiffer suspension (which I can at least de-select), climate control (which I don't need) and various other trim that I don't need.

I want Xenon lights, but you can only order this as part of a package that includes interior lighting enhancements (lights around the cup holders), a light sensor and rain sensor.

Audi certainly know how to make their money out of mugs like me.

I find the whole speccing thing really frustrating TBH - you have all these options but rarely have any way of comparing say a mid range hifi to the top option, or comparing active suspension to a car without it - it's 90% guesswork but potentially £1000s at stake.

We tested the M135i with probably the worst sales guy I've seen; he knew naff all about the car, didn't explain anything and just got some driver to let us drive the car - nice bloke but he also knew very little about the car.

So the extras (about £4k) we have gone for (we ordered elsewhere) are mostly guesswork!

Que many comments about ordering a Audi and white paint and Diesel engines.

These packs are normally worth it, I wouldn't buy a premium car without climate control anyway. You could always buy it without the pack and get the seats off eBay?

Defo tick xenons though, rain sensor and those kind of things are great.

I think BMW let you pick as a pack of with seprate items

You will if you ever want to hope in selling it on. A high end car without without the expected high end spec is almost impossible to sell. Just ask all those people who didn't 'need' leather seats in their Jag or that automatic box in their Merc.

it is still a mystery to me why anyone would buy a car with leather seats let alone pay extra for them. I'd want a hefty discount, they are horrible.

Speccing just to please the next buyer is very common and quite retarded. Buy for yourself. And accept you'll get killed when you come to sell.

It's got standard air-con (without a digital display) which I thought should be fine.

It's only a 1.4 hatchback hehe

BMW actually appear to have brought out a new trim level for that exact situation. "sport" gives you the better seats and steering wheel but not the kit or big wheels and stiffer suspension of the "m-sport"

You do still have to wade through stuff like "extended visibility package" though.

Ahh yes the soggy suspension pack!

Would it be easier to try find a nearly new with the spec you want?

When the Focus RS (Mk.2) was released (or was in the motions of release) I went to the dealer to inquire (Focus ST owner at the time) and the salesman could not work out when I said can I just have the key-less entry on its own, I didn't want the Bluetooth (have a nice unobtrusive sun-visor clip on) auto lights and rain sensing wipers of the Lux 1 pack (the base RS was basically the same kit spec as my ST (ST-2 spec)) but no, there were no separate options you had to have the 'Lux Packs' (each added £1500 to the base cost of the car). Its stupid really I realize its all about making money but in that instance I would (had I bought one) just have bought the base spec car (in green of course) and left the Lux packs out of it or they could have had a bit more money out of me but for the one option that I wanted.

There seem to be none available. Petrol automatic and I'm very fussy with the spec as you can probably tell.

Ordered a new A1 around three months ago and just about every option was available seperately. I personally only specced different colour seats and air vent surrounds but going through the configuator 99% of all options appeared to be available on their own..

Odd.mk2 Rs are still holding their money very well with a lux pack 2 commanding more than a base car. Why wouldn't you have the Bluetooth then just not use it?

Exactly. Even if you have a clip-on unit, the integrated ones are always better quality imo. It's not just about making money - each feature like auto lights/wipers etc will require software upgrades to the onboard systems, it makes more sense to supply them together if the hardware has to change.

RE: OP. Order the sports package, select decent suspension and sell the wheels for some smaller ones you do like. The Xenon pack is all worth it - no chance I'd buy a nearly-new car now without auto lights and wipers, as well as climate control.

I personally don't care whether a car has air con or climate control, as long as it blows cold air inside in the summer, and demists the windows in the winter.
Climate control just tells you the temp as a number, instead of a dial / slider moving from red to blue smile

As for auto lights and wipers, both are easily within reach. What's next, a remote control for them? smile

No... climate control adjusts automatically to a specific constant temperature and maintains that temperature. Basic aircon either reduces or increases the air temperature until you either change the setting or switch it off.
