XJR brake judder through steering wheel but not pedal
Discussion
My XJR has developed a brake judder which can be felt through the steering wheel, but strangely not through the brake pedal. It's a side to side shaking on the steering wheel, so feels like a wobble. It is mainly when braking from speed i.e 70 to 55 mph and is not really noticeable at lower pottering round town speeds. However, I can feel a pulsing from the ABS through the pedal at low speed, but no ABS light comes on.
I hear a clink/rattle going over bumps from the nearside front. Also the offside front brake disc shield has lost a bolt, it rattles due to being held secure by a cable tie.
I had the front discs, pads, calipers and track rod ends replaced 12000 miles ago. I would be surprised if it is a warped disc. I had new tyres fitted to the front due to uneven wear, a nut being loose...I think. This has been sorted and the alignment has been done. The fronts wheels were then fitted to the backs and vice versa. I will check tomorrow but am pretty sure there are no buckles on the swapped wheels. Nothing was mentioned by the tyre fitters who did flag this up when I had different wheels fitted previously.
Any thoughts?

My XK developed a judder, though more quickly than yours. All down to using after market disc and pads; successfully replaced with Jag parts.
Excessive wear in the lower link bushes could also be the culprit.
I had an S Type from new and the front disc and pads lasted 70k miles.
The pulsing through the pedal at low speed is unknown to me.

Hi,
My XJ8 had brake judder when I bought it - I only lightly cleaned the discs in the lathe and it cured it and when clocked with a dial indicator the runout was barely visible.
When you say you can feel the abs pulsing from low speed are you actually going for broke to get the abs acting, or could that be the bad discs showing up? My car has to sleep out at the mo and here in Orkney where there is much salt laden wind, it doesn't take long before you can feel the pads going over the rusty bit and onto the clean piece where the pads had been sitting - a light pulse again. Everything was fine on the recent MOT including brake balance so it's just a matter of keeping on top of it. Worth checking for warp though if you have access to a dial indicator.

quick edit: I just re-read your post and noticed the rattle part - these cars are very bad on wheel bearings and lower ball joints - any play in those will only magnify any small brake issues - so worth checking those and replacing that missing dust shield bolt - a bit fiddly because the hub flange is in the way, but you can use a small ring spanner on a torx bit to tighten it.
