Nissan Altima -US Hire Car
Discussion
Just got back from a week in the states, staying in Las Vegas. I arranged to have a rental car some months ago through Hertz and this is what I got upon arrival:

Uber Boring styling but a good turn of pace 2.5na petrol. Extremely comfortable, did 969miles over the week with ease and I wasn't even tired after 550 mile round trip over two days to the Grand Canyon.
Stuck it in Cruise Control and let it waft us along. 36.7mpg was the average over the 969miles according to the OB display. Majority of which was sat doing 65-80mph depending on limit.
Definately want to do the Rent a Racer next time. Perhaps just a 24-48hr one though. The costs would be too large for a whole week.
Ps I was rather jealous of the two Japanese guys I saw lapping the 13mile route of Red Rock Canyon a number if times in a 458 Italia Spyder. It sounded truly epic! They were taking it in turns to go around.
The route is an astonishing ribbon of tarmac with hairpins, long straights and even chicanes. It climbs up to a plateau then dramatically drops away back to the start. Think of it as a twinned town of the nurburgring draped over a stunning landscape, with speed limits maxing at 40mph which these Japanese guys ignored completely. Lol

We need a rental car review thread. I think it would be very informative.
I drove a similar mileage from San Fran to vegas, taking in Yosemite, tioga pass, Death Valley, etc in a base model convertible mustang. Very good looking car, not especially fast considering the 305 bhp 3.7 liter V6. But it was certainly brisk enough and sounded good. Also rode very well and was comfortable to sit in for hours.
It's a very honest car I think. It doesn't pretend to be posh. It's very simple, there is no smart engineering flair, at least not on show. Where European convertibles may fold the roof away under a cover and do things automatically, the slang you have to undo latches by hand, hold the hood motor button until you hear the motor straining and then the roof just folds on a shelf behind the rear seats with all its tent work on show.
Six speed auto and cruise control were the only features. But it really shows you what you need. You dont really need climate control, or auto lights or auto wipers. You don't even need a Bluetooth stereo!! Small wheels, big spongy tyres, lovely.
It returned a respectable 27 mpg US according to the OBD and I'd hire one again in a heartbeat.

) one of these from Hertz in Cincinnati in April, did the job. More like 24mpg though which says a lot about how it was driven....
