Last night before entering on a dual carriageway an ambulance overtook me as they just went straight over the roundabout.
We both took the same exit but (they were slightly ahead)
As we both got on the dual carriageway he was barely doing 35 but still had all his lights on and his sirens. Basically he was holding me up which was odd.
He was on the left hand lane but I wasn't sure if I could overtake incase they needed to make a quick dash somewhere?

I had no idea what the rules were for this so I just followed until we went our separate ways...
Could I have overtaken him? (legally)

This has been asked before and I'm sure the answer is that there's no reason why you shouldn't overtake (within the speedlimit) but you need to be sure that you don't blat past and join in with the accident the EV is on its way to, although I imagine that if they were close to an accident they'd straddle both lanes and stop you getting past.

Not sure about the legality of it, but chances are they had to drive slowly as the person in the back was receiving emergency treatment on the way to hospital.

You overtaking them is going to potentially cause them to have to try and pass you again at the next junction/roundabout/set of lights. Most people probably would overtake I suppose. I probably wouldn't?
I didn't do it and I did think that but they were driving away from the local hospital (which was 2mins in the other direction)

Like someone said, the driver would slow down if urgent patient care is taking place in the back.

If it were safe to do so I would overtake. But then also keep an eye in mirrors if you run into traffic or they need to get past you again.
