Jimmy McRae's Escort RS1800 goes to auction

Silverstone Auctions to sell this mega Escort with one or two famous former drivers

All rally-spec Escorts are becoming hugely desirable cars at auction now, particularly the super rare RS1800s. Add some McRae family provenance to the mix and you can see why 'LSV171' has got potential bidders so excited.

The 1977 Stobart liveried car will be sold by Silverstone Auctions at its Race Retro event on Saturday February 22 with an estimate of between £65,000 and £85,000. The McRae link is actually quite recent, the car being tested by Colin and taken to victory by Jimmy on the 2006 Roger Clark Rally and Alister on a memorial rally for his brother. This car also won the pre-1981 category of the 2007 British Historic Championship with Jimmy at the wheel. After being rebuilt in 2009, it has been raced in Majorca recently by current owner Jim Whelan.

It has its Historic Rally Vehicle Identity Form plus tax and MOT until May so is ready to go in 2014. Go on, you know you want to... Unsure? See the videos below!

Even though the auction is a couple of months away, the lot list has some wonderful cars in already. How about a one-owner Lotus Elan Sprint or an Alfa Giulia race car?

Nice story PH. If you'e that interested in MK2 escorts and the McRaes I'm still waiting on the courtesy of a reply to the emails I sent the site and Garlick on the event held to mark 25 years of Kames in which Jimmy drove Colin's MK2 and Alister drove the Rothmans MK2.

£65-85k?

And the rest. I'll be stunned if that doesn't make six figures.

It's been for sale for ages. Yes it's linked to the McRaes but doesn't have the added attraction of the ex-works Mk2s.

£65-85k, cheaper than building one. I'd say it's worth more.
Same here, but given that it's been with Oakfields for 12 months probably more guess there isn't the demand at the moment. I would love it, awesome piece of kit.

Surely just being an RS1800 puts it into £80k + money??

With stories like this they might get more attention - but given that it's apparently been for-sale for a while for way less than 6 figures, the buyer would be a berk smile

To emphasise, it's not a classic rallycar - it's a 77 Escort rebuilt to work as a rally car using more modern parts.

That's appealing to some but it lacks proper history - without the McRae connection it wouldn't be that interesting I suspect (tho as someone said - it's probably cheaper than making it)

Nail.On.Head

The new buyer will infact, be purchasing a tax book and I.D that carries history.

The rest of it is victim to a modern restoration, and is as original as Joan Rivers.

I stand corrected. Similar cars have been sold for similar money, well advertised at least, without the McRae connection.

The car was pretty much brand new when it won in 2006. Built by Prepfab if my memory is correct.

It's the Roger Albert Clark Rally BTW.

Scrolled down and what did I see - the second vid is mine!

Not one of my best, but it will interesting to see what a PH link does to the click count...

Shame the RAC didn't attract a few big names this year, it was still a bloody good rally though.

If I remember correctly, this car had quite a lot of media attention when it was built due to the McRae connection..? Pretty much the ultimate old-meets-new mk2 Escort in my book, although I'm sure the lack of originality will discount interest from many of the hardcore collectors though!

I like this a lot! Good story PH smile

Cracking looking car, I heard a story that a chap very recently spent £49,000 just on a rebuild of a MK2 escort rs 2000, + the purchase price, £65k estimate sounds a bit like a good price, but as mentioned I feel it will reach more than that.

Still nowhere near as cool as Colin's own Escort it must be said!
