Does anyone know if the CLS63 uses the same gearbox as the SLS?

Ours has some problems in the comfort setting and we're wondering if it might be the same as the SLSs that have the same issue.

Not sure (though hopefully someone on here will). Out of interest, what are the issues you're encountering? I'm looking at a 63 this weekend and it would be useful to know what to keep an eye out for...

SLS gearbox is a dual clutch unit unique to SLS in Mercedes' range.

I have a CLS 63. I use sport mode but mine rarely engages first gear. Like comfort, it generally selects 2 to pull away. The first couple of 2 to 3 changes can also feel slightly lumpy when the car is cold. I've seen reference to a software update being required for the former and also a suggestion that the car adapts to your style of driving (I don't try to leave rubber on the road when I pull away). Regarding the slight lumpiness, there is no fault code reported on mine and it hasn't got worse over 10k miles; likely it is nothing.

US forums have referred to a potential gearbox fault that'sabout £1k to fix but I can't remember the detail.

Bottom line, the AMG variant gear boxes are not notably prone to faults and the earlier generation ailments linked to a certain type of radiator that leaked coolant into transmission fluid do not affect cars after 04.

Some of the early 722.9 7 speed gearboxes had an issue with the speed sensor plate. Mercedes had an internal problem with their supplier and would only supply replacements with the complete valve block assembly on and individual basis for a time. I understand this issue has since been resolved and most of the gearboxes affected have been repaired and the sensor plate can now be bought on its own.

The 7 speed auto is reputed to be a very smooth changing transmission, so any clunking or excessive jerkiness, especially when cold should be treated with suspicion. As stated above, the SLS uses an entirely different MCT twin clutch gearbox, not the 7 speed auto.

If you have a problem with you gearbox, take to a garage with Star diagnostics and the fault should be diagnosed in minutes.

Had my CLS63(2007) for 3 months / 2000 miles, no issues. Like most auto's it doesn't like the cold !

Thanks for the responses, ours is a 2011.

The problem it has in comfort mode is when coming to a stop it shudders almost as if it was trying to stall. Mercedes had the car for a long time and ended up changing an air pipe somewhere that made it a bit better but it's still doing it.

As a 2011 it will the MCT box, the same as my S212. Mine is quite "lumpy" at low revs, particularly changing from 2 to 1.

I've had it looked at during servicing and they tell me that all is well.
