untapped statistics..........
Discussion
We constantly here statistics about accidents down at camera sits (regression to the mean ignored), 1/3 of accidents caused by speeding etc etc etc.
Instead of arguing these statistics, are there any statistics that argue the other way.
for instance, how much electricity do these cameras use/waste?, how much film (that's made from animals remember ) do they use? how much of a 'carbuncle' are they in the country. How much do speed humps effect bicycles, horses etc?, how much paper is used/wasted posting out NIP's (3 million of them was it? or was it 2 million - don't know) and how many trees are cut down for the purpose.
you see the direction I'm coming from?

i'll have a go. A gatso has a radar device, a camera (mechanical so prob litle quiescence) and that's about it I think. A couple of hundred watts perhaps. They also work in all sorts of temperatures, so there's probably a small frost stat heater in there as well Say 250w all in al. So, if there's 5000 of the things, they are using about 1.25 megawatts of power. A kilo of coal gives you about (I think) 17kWh heat, 30% of which turns into electricity at a power station (ish). These are all guesstimates. So, 30 megawatt hours of electric a day, that's about 11 gigawatt hours a year, using 2.2 million kilos of coal, or 2200 tonnes. That sound awfully wastfull when you look at it like that.
miles driven (in vans (like cars but bigger)) to empty the film. erm........anyone got any figures?
NIP's, they are A4 in size (or mine was) 21.0cm x 29.7cm = 0.062 square meters. x 3 million = 186000 square meters. 3 times that if you include the envelope = 558000 square meters. minimum football pitch is 4050 square meters (90x45) so that's 138 football pitches.

The only stats that really count against needless loss of life are needless loss of life stats. I'm doing it.
Hi Bryan,
I would say, If 1/3 of all accidents are caused by speeding drivers, then get all the slow, dawdling drivers off the Bl...y road! We could improve the accident figures by 66%!
....Er sorry Bryan, couldn't resist!...........

Hi Bryan,
Just making my point of course about how much we have to view statistics with sceptisism, as I'm sure that you and Paul are both aware. Please don't regard my intervention as critical to your posts in any way. It was just too good to resist

8Pack Incidently Paul, whilst you're watching this post,(sorry to digress Bryan).
Kathy Keeler from BRAKE was on GMR this week with Alan Beswick. Saying that Drink driving had increased by 1/3 in 10 yrs amongst young drivers, and called for MORE TRAFFIC POLICE! Does she realise what is happening? This from someone who defends speed cameras? Sorry Guys, back to you!

Most everyone in road safety is calling for more traffic police now. They will need to be proper trafpol, however. None of this three week course rubbish.

Hi Paul, Sorry once again, I really don't want to pinch Bryans post.
Realising that the number of speed cameras is indirectly proportional to the number of trafpol. I wonder why she doesn't? Does she not connect the two?
Jus' wanted to let you know what she said Paul in case you should cross swords.
Again sorry Bryan, please continue.

Perhaps we could remove the camera boxes and have TrafPol sitting perched on the posts that remain.
This means that the person who currently replaces the film can be used to deliver food to the TrafPol and replace their colostomy bags.
Everyone's a winner !
And now I'm picturing a copper on a ten foot pole in high vis clothing pulling out his pocketbook and licking his pencil in yet another vain attempt to draw an accurate picture of a speeding car before it passes out of sight...
Thanks for the image...safespeed said:

Have you read "The Fifth Elephant" by Terry Pratchett? There's a wonderful description of an "alternative" speed camera technology...
