Is it still as prevalent ?

I remember that it was rife in the 1990s and into the noughties.

Was thinkign I hadnt heard of anyones car getting nicked for a while but then remembered one lad had a Passat go off his drive and another guy a nearly new Merc.

I think the days of kids nicking Metros and Fiestas has largely gone and now its stuff stolen to order with the keys or some other hack, like the BMW thing, I suppose most go for parts or are sent abroad.

I wonder wwhat the least likely car is to get stolen nowadays, somethign not worth much, non premium, with a petrol engine, not fast. Its kind of gone full circle, it used to be snotters that went missing mostly and were found burnt out, now its the nice stuff, guess the factory/alarm and immobiliser is to thank for that.

I had a diesel Honda Civic (8th gen, FK3) stolen a couple of years ago. Presumably didn't have keys but did have a way to bypass the immobiliser and get it started - I heard an alarm going off outside, when I went to look about 20s later it was driving off.

Never got flagged on any ANPR so presumably put on false plates or stripped or transported elsewhere.

Still not really figured it out - doesn't seem like the sort of thing that would get stolen to order, and presumably bypassing immobilisers is beyond the abilities of opportunists.

Aberdeen has a substantial car crime problem at the moment, mostly young kids knicking Audis/BMW's etc and hooning around the city. They do get caught but sentenced to a couple of months in jail or community orders so theres no deterrent.

Around our way at the moment its basically anything that isn't nailed down will go.

Its not really what you expect living in the countryside but I guess they can be in, nick everything in sight and then long gone before anyone notices.

Have you seen the price of Honda parts? Most probably stolen to order for parts or ringing.

They've brought in an Interceptors style unit and have called in the helicopter up from Glasgow (the one that crashed frown ) a few times. It seems to have reduced the volume of thefts, but you still hear of it going on.

Twenty years ago a twelve year old kid could easily break into and hotwire most of the cars on the road and unsurprisingly joyriding was rife. People used to nick a car rather than get a taxi home from the pub on a Friday night. I get the impression that manufacturers have increased security on cars to such a level that it's only dedicated car thieves pinching them nowadays.

I think the petty car theft has all but gone with improved car security. Instead, you have the insanely scary thefts of breaking into houses for keys, car jacking and all that business.

Organised crime won't ever go away, as its too easy to get cars out of the country for massive profits.

A good TV show - was watching it just last night as it happens...

Had 2 mercs stolen down the road just recently. Keys not stolen and no one heard the alarm, another keyless entry fob job?

Possibly. Could also have been uplifted onto a flatbed.

A recession always brings an increase in crime. There was a scrote caught trying doorhandles in our car park two days ago....

Had my previous car stolen earlier this year (was a new BMW 328i Touring), house was burgled overnight and the keys taken. I didn't know it had gone until I came down in the morning and found one of the downstairs doors not fully shut.

The police found the car a week later which surprised me as I didn't expect to see it again. Took another 9 weeks for the car to be recovered and repaired at a dealership, was very frustrating.

First time I'd had a car stolen, not something I would like to go through again.
