So i've rented a van, i've now discovered it says it does not come with a collision damage waver, only 3rd party insurance
there's a £250 deposit, i assume i'll lose that if i damage it, but is that it? will they have the van insured still? i can't see that they would be sending me out in what's probably £15k+ worth of van without cover for it and expect me to potentially have to pay for the whole thing if i were to write it off.
How does this work? is this normal for van hire? is this some sort of tactic which will get me to buy insurance that costs more than the van rental on the day?
i normally get excess protection for about £2 a day when i rent a car but this won't cover a whole van

Call some other companies, see what their terms are.

If they turn out all the same, I'd pay for the extra insurance. If you did damage it, or wreck it it may take the shine of Christmas.

Not sure if this will help but you could try arranging a separate insurance policy with a company that specialises in insuring the excess.

Read your rental agreement. It should all be in there.

If uncomfortable, buy insurance.

there is no detail

this is what it say

Price includes:
Free cancellation, (up to 48 hours before collection)
Third party liability insurance for a maximum of 21 days, (excluding Minibuses)
Vehicle licensing fee
Total rental cost includes VAT
Price excludes:
Fuel
Mileage
Additional driver, (if applicable)
Any damage or theft excess charges
The basic rate for Minibus hire does not include insurance - a quote for rental with insurance can be provided on request

that sort of suggests that there is an undocumented excess for damage that i would be liable for but no t the whole thing, that sound right?
can't find the excess details anywhere in the booking details

Ask what the excess is.

That's your liability.

Compare with cost of CDW/3rd party insurance and make judgement.

ah in the terms it says there is a £750 excess
so looks like it's a normal rental even though on their FAQ it says CDW is excluded

CDW and TDW are rental companies and their sales reps cash cows.

All vehicles are always fully insured.

With an excess payable by the rental co to the insurers of course, in case of an accident.

The company hypes up the excess (was often quoted close to £1000) in case of collision etc etc but tells you you can "insure" against the excess. They often put it to you as if you are "uninsured" if you don't accept.

They put this down as CDW or TDW (theft damage waiver, a relatively recent similar scam). You may also be offered other "insurance". By the time it's all stacked up the cost of the rental itself becomes insignificant.

So if you don't accept, you are liable for the first £x that the excess amount quoted is, in case of an at fault accident.

It is possible to rent online from certain internet companies / agents (not the rental cos themselves) and some of these offer full CDW etc by default, so you don't pay anything. Although rental cos are masters at finding something you still have to pay for in any case. Quite a dirty business if you ask me.

And then you'll get offered Windscreen Insurance and Tyre Insurance and quite probably Lightning Strike Insurance as well...
