Inspired by the "modern day mk1 or mk2 escort" thread, and the cinquecento shed thread, if someone wanted a less-rusty more powerful relatively small hot hatch, what would you recommend?

106gti
Saxo
Any other ideas?

Is a classic mini a hot hatch?

I would say the closest modern equivalents would be:

mk1 Ford Ka (although these rust)
VW Lupo/Up!
Citroen C1/Peugeot 107

So perhaps a SportKa or a Lupo GTi if you're after the go-faster version.

So did the mini!

I would agree with ka though, cheap to buy and repair, easy to work on, basic and you can throw them into corners

IIRC a 2.0 swap was not impossible, maybe in a sportKa?

106 rallye
Stripped ek civic
Lupo sport
Saxo vts
Clio 172

The key is weight loss, although nothing comes close to a mini, when trying to replicate the feeling of a classic mini..... The good and bad.

The original Mini was low power. My 1979 1000 had 39bhp.
So a modern Mini would be a C1/Aygo/107.

The majority have had upgrades though like mines. 100bhp is common, not the norm but common. This is why the lupo sport is a good shout. They are way cheaper than the gti and still have some poke with 100bhp.

I think the successor to the original mini and it's ideals, eg cheap basic motoring for the masses, is the K11 Micra.

Yeah, think that is the nearest in terms of ethos, as in small, cheap, fun, frugal, well packaged and largely classless. It really is a shame that there was never a 100 ish bhp version with wider tyres, closer ratio box, lower suspension, better seats and a few sporting cues, as it is it is fun but the ratios are too wide and the seats too flat and a bit slow.
