Hello all

I need to fit 18" Wheels all round to the car. What's the best width and offset and tyre sizes for handling?

Anyone running 18's on theirs?

Cheers

Crumbs, 18 inches is big! Hope they fit & ride isn't too raucous.

(Presume profile will be very low?)

I use 265/35/18s on the rear and ride feels fine.

I have 235/40 18 on the rear. To go to a suitable tyre for the nose down front attitude you need something like 215/40 18. Difference in diameter between the two is (235-215) x 40% x2 = 16mm.
Ride should be reasonably comfortable.

Too wide a tyre on the front and you could make it heavy to steer, and risk the tyres catching on turning.

Imola offset is 25 front and 33 rear. Talking to someone the other day who put Griff rears on the front, ie offset 33, he then has trouble with them catching on the inside on turning.

You may already know, but offset is the number of millimetres the inside face of the wheel (that butts up against the disk) is away from the centre line of the wheel, so a 40 offset wheel, when on the car, will be 40 mm further inside the wheel arch than a 0 offset wheel.

You can use a 7mm spacer to adjust say a 40 offset wheel down to 33 mm.
If you buy an 18 offset wheel, you cannot do anything to make it 25 offset. It will always stick out too far. I know. I have some 18 offset wheels.

15 and 16" are the best for handling and comfort for the Chimaera .

My first Chimaera used to catch the battery box on extreme lock with the standard 15"

Would be good but they don't do the ones I want in 17" - and I'm very picky!!

I think they are the same as these which I spotted a while ago - albeit in 17"

Thanks - good info here. I do have Gaz gold Pro so I can adjust the platform height to give it the right attitude I think - Not a big fan of different size things front and rear - I may be a bit OCD!!

Got PAS but the catching is a a definite possibility.

Great explanation - I'd read about it but could never quite get it straight in my head.

They only do the ones I want in 40 offset so the rears will be about right but I will need a spacer on the front......

My 17 inch road wheels are 40 offset. It's a standard Ford size. I use 5 mm spacers front and rear, which brings the offset down to 35mm.

My rear tyres are 235 wide with no problem.
I tried 225 fronts but had catching problems.
215 were ok. 205 too, but looked a bit skinny.
You can fit bigger spacers, but 15mm is an awkward size for a spacer. Too big for a standard one, too small for a hub-centric.
If you fit anything over 6mm spacers, you will also need longer studs.

Make sure the centre hole in the new wheeis at least 63.2mm diameter, or it won't go over the hub. Many 40 offset wheels are 57 or 60 mm centre, so won't fit. If you don't know what I am talking about email me.

Finally, I hope you have already worked out that you need 4x108 stud pattern. "Multi-fit" wheels have 8 holes, 4 x100 and 4x108, so are ok.
