944 S2 to Impreza Turbo
Discussion
Performance comparisons, well they are both very different to drive & will be down to your personal taste if you like the Scoobydoo impretzel or not, they are IMHO great fun to drive but in a very diferent way to the porker.
Speed wise- s2 & uk spec impretzel= similar power altho 4wd transmision soaks up more bhp, however impretzel is lighter so does make some of that back.
If considering the subaru route consider the similar year Legacy Turbo estate, same single turbo engine & bit more up-market to the impretzel much more space inside, more grown up interior & less likely to have been owned by a tit!- wel unless you get the one I had for a bit
Scoobys are sh*t on fuel tho in my experience.
Why not consider putting a tow bar on the S2? they are a bit heaver than a classic imprezel so can tow a greater weight legally, the only downside perhaps is lack of space in the s2 for all your spares for the Caterham.

944s have always been functional cars, good on what you need, very little in the way of frivolous extras. seeing as how Porsche took the trouble to give you a little wheel to adjust your headlights for towing,it would be nothing short of sacrilege to igonore their efforts!
lots of S2s have towbars. My 2.7 pulls a small boat, no problems. Unless you plan on pulling the caterham through a muddy field, why not keep the car you love?

I have an S2 & a Westfield, bought an old volvo 850 TDi to tow with.........
I don't know it my S2 would tow my Westfield (530Kg), covered trailer (700kg) + 2 jerrycans, set of wet's, tools (100kg) 1330kg total..........
I suppose a Caterham & minno trailer weigh less that 1000Kg's ??? so should be OK with S2 ???

Cheers Guys for the responses,
Could tow on the S2, but its a minter and I really can bare to put a towbar on the back.
Only other car I have access to is my girlfriends 1.1L Metro and that can't even propel itself along at a decent rate!
Thought about a third car, like a Carlton or even an Ex Recovery Vehicle off Ebay (not sure the neighbours would be happy!) but don't want to tax and insure 3 cars.
Re MPG, are Subaru's that bad? Expecting 26-27mpg on a run?

well, you can but wish. I had an older 'Preza turbo before moving to the light side and it was thirstier than a dehydrated elephant. maybe things have changed. On a long run on the motorway, not towing, then maybe. around town, or with a trailer, I'd be amazed if you got more than 20-24mpg.
What's the full story with the Caterham? Why cant you drive it where you are going, is it road legal, how often do you track it etc?
My thinking is - don't change your main car just for a few weekends a year to get it to a track (unless it's every weekend
). If you really don't want to drive it there, then how about hiring a car with a towbar just when you need it.
Can you tell I don't want you to sell the S2

Did 10 trackdays this year and the Caterham hasn't a windscreen plus I've got Slicks, Wets etc.
Money permitting I want to do more this year.
Also I think an Impreza will be cheaper to run over 25k miles a year
I don't normally get attached to cars but this one is an exception.
Way I see it, if it sells at a good price, well it sells and if not, never mind.

Subaru parts prices make Porsche look cheap!!!
£400 for 4 STI mudflaps from a dealer - geeeezzzz!
If your planning on doing 25K a year then it's gotta be an oil burner.
Subaru @ 20mpg (£4/gallon) =£5000
Audi/VW etc TDi @ 45mpg =£2250
£2750 saving = 10 trackdays........
Some of these oil burners are really good nowadays, I went of a driver training day with Don Palmer earlier on in the year & he'd changed his daily drive from BMW M5 to Gold TDi (150, chipped to 180 with a mountain of tourqe)
3 series BMW's are pretty good with TDi engines especially the 330d & there RWD.

I don't keep an eye on car prices but I have to say that I don't think you'll be able to buy any of those for the same budget as a classic shape Impreza or an S2
