Has the nanny state finally reached its summit, or is this just a sign of things to come? This MINI advert apparently encourages dangerous driving.

"We considered that the text in conjunction with the impression of a fast-moving vehicle was likely to convey the impression of excessive speed, and that that was the main message of the ad.
‘Because the poster gave the impression that the car was being driven at excessive speed, in a built-up environment, along with the text ‘It’s miles more fun in a Mini’, we concluded it was irresponsible and was likely to encourage dangerous driving."

Do they really think that this picture will turn all goodbehaving drivers into maniacs? How idiotic this is.

Absolute bks.

Who the fk sees an advert for a car they don't own and suddenly thinks "yeah I'll do 60 past this school at 3pm"

It just unfortunately seems like a sign of things to come.

If certain groups had their way I'm sure cars would be banned along with anything else deemed slightly fun.

Shame really

The ASA said the advert must not appear again in its current form and warned BMW not to focus on speed in any future campaigns.

Nobbers

Good luck with the M cars. They ought to show an interior pic of the M5 hitting 180mph plus and just put in the small print it was done on a track.

It's nothing new, it's been policy for ages.

Who decided on this policy to ban the selling of cars on performance? What is their democratic legitimacy?

25% of the population voted for a group in an election who then set up a raft of legislation that is neither discussed or voted on

It's not even legislation, it's just policy. Pulled out of the arse of some quango, no doubt.

What happens if BMW ignore it?

Companies will refuse to display their adverts?

I believe if the advert contravenes advertising standards then yes as people can be fined etc...eventually, but they tend to follow the guidelines as it's good practice (whether we agree or not)

And yes I think it's bks.

Agreed, what a load of bks!

How far we've declined into a Nanny State. I remember fondly, one of my favourite 80's poster board ads, for the Vauxhall Astra GTE, with an F1 car emblazoned in police livery, waiting in a lay-by. Christ, they'd never get away with that now.

Same happened to a vauxhall billboard poster,

Seems they only need one complaint to act and remove the advert,

Maybe the advertisers should take advantage of political correctness instead of trying to comply with it.IE something along the lines of 'we ( could ) have shown how quick this car ( could ) go in the right places together with a blurred photogragh to convey just how good it is at shrinking time and distance. But unfortunately the rules wouldn't allow us to do that so you'll just have to imagine it for yourself'.lol

And yet, days earlier, the ASA weren't bothered about a different BMW advert - though this was looked at under different 'rules' ...

My considered opinion remains that they are morons.

It was obviously the fireworks that tipped the pc lot over the edge.Although it seems a bit unfair assuming they weren't actually lit and set off while the car was in motion on the road.lol
