Gents

I'm looking for the headlight diodes. After reading a post earlier in the week I thought this might be my issue?

Looking at the wiring diagram I should have a D1&2 somewhere near the relay board.

The only diodes I can find are inside a relay type case and there are 3 of them all reading ok. And the wiring colours are nothing like so I suspect these are for something else.

Has anyone got a pic of what I'm looking for please?

Cheers Karl.

Sorted

The reason I couldn't find the diodes was:-

A. I didn't actually expect them to be actual diodes as you would find on any electronic circuit board just soldered to a couple of male spade crims and rammed into a fuse carrier!

And

B. some one had very helpfully removed said diodes and replaced them with 2 30amp fuses! I think I have found my problem.

Does anyone know what size the diodes should be so I can get some from Maplins on Monday?

On the plus side the headlight pods are now working well. As are the elec windows.

On the down side I have some very high resistance readings inbetween known "good" sources of earth and all the dash earths. Time for a bit of rewiring me thinks? I have the dash completely out now so shouldnt be to much hassle to sort. Found a braided earth that wraps around/connects a lot of stuff together. It was connected to the door mounts on the passenger side and the bolt had snapped. So that's one bad earth found, any bodies guess how many more I'll find over the holiday.

In an electronics shop, ordinary IN4001 diodes will be fine, these are 1 amp 50 volt, and should cost a few pence. There is a range from IN4001 to IN4007 , 50 volts throught to 1000v, and all 1 amp.

Thanks Andy

I'll be off down to Maplins in the morning.

Cheers Karl.

If you dont get them let me know. i have a few of the diodes left. I didnt use them when i rewired my lights. i used 4relays. 2 for the lamps and 2 with diodes fir the pods all linked up. works treat.
tbh the last owner had done this. it didnt work. just needed a little tweak.
Anyway i have the diodes if you need them.

Hi Marcus

Not so good. Got the Diodes no problem from Maplins and made them up onto spades. Installed them as I thought they should go. Pods work but no matter what with the ignition on the full beam is always on?

With the ignition off but the lights on the main beam light on the dash is lit constantly but you can hear the flash relay making and breaking?

Ive taken some photos of the front and rear of the relay board. I can't post them from the old iPad but will try to get them up later so someone can hopefully point me in the right direction.

Cheers Karl.

You see the 1A ones on the wedge and on a regular basis someone posting that they have blown, so I wonder if it's worth installing 5A ones instead? They are a bit fatter but maybe 25 to 50p each and being rated for much more current should last forever.

Agreed Adam

If I could have got higher rated diodes It would have been a good idea. I will definitely replace them once I have the problems sorted.

My DHC S2 have a standard relay board with one fuse slot for a diode.

The one on my project FHC has three fuse slots. I am assuming for a commoning link/fuse and two diodes. I've tried the configurations and directions I think are correct to no avail.

I'll try and put the picks up. iPads are crap for that.

Cheers Karl.

Stuck on main beam smacks of iether the light relays sticking or more likely the stalk switch. With a screwdriver handle tap the relay cases and see if one or the other makes a difference. Have a good look at the stalk switch next and a liberal spray of contact spray like Electralube might help. Finally check the main nose cone services ground conectionon on the passanger side, near the suspension turret. Crack off the nut and give it and the associated washers a good clean and rough up and refit. Let us know how you get on.

Or try what i've got. i've no diodes on the fuse board.
4 relays behind the lamps. 2 with diodes. all linked up to each other. works a treat. 2 for the lamps and 2 for the pods. i'm in the pub now but if you like i'll draw up schematic tonight and send it on.

The wirings the same priniciple as what i have in those pics except mine are to separate relays away from the box. try it. it works! heres a snap of the diodes, i put them in my wallet last night.

Update time

Just spent some more time in the garage. The lights are now all back together. I have cleaned and reassembled everything under the bonnet, even took a small wire wheel to the main earth point and all it's connections.

I think I have a fairly serious earth fault but have yet to find it.

Here are the latest simptoms.

Pods work perfectly.

Lights on with stalk in normal position (I think possibly main and full beams)

Pull on flasher stalk no change

Push stalk forward to full beam. Definite change in light pattern (forgot to look at the filaments to see which was on)

No matter what full beam dash indicator always on

Ignition off lights on. Got my Lad to pull the flasher as I could here a clicking in the engine bay?

Guess what it was "THE INJECTORS" unplugged them clicking stops

Might be time for a specialist me thinks :-(

This makes me sound like an expert, but thanks to Wedg1e for this. The Diodes work one way, I learnt this in my ONC back in 1970. My headlights did the same as yours after I indvertently put the diode in the wrong way.
ps I thought it was just a link wire.

Yep I know tested them all for direction with a fluke DVM. and tried them in all installed permutations. Still no good. Getting a little frustrated to say the least. I have 3 diodes in this car but only 1 in the DHC.

I think there is more to my problems than just the diodes? As I can't see how these could possible cause the injectors to fire?

I think some muppet has had a proper pi$$ about with this car.

Cheers Karl.
