During the speed trials in 2012 a lady rider on a combination was killed. The inquest had not been held so the event did not take place this year in case the coroner made some recommendations on safety. However, since then the green party lead councillors of the Economic Development & Culture Committee have decided that the speed trials should not take place in the future and they have already pencilled in an alternative event for the day in September when the trials would normally take place. They have also decided that there should be an event to ‘Celebrate ‘ the end of the speed trials!!!!!!!
There has been no full council involvement in this decision.

There is an e-petition on the Brighton and Hove city website and I ask as many of you as possible who care about such things to sign the petition to keep an event that has been part of Brighton and motor sport in this country since 1905.
This could also mean the end of the Brighton and Hove Motor club as it is their main event and income for the year.
We need at least 1250 signatures to get a full council debate.
Please sign up before the deadline date of 23rd January 2014. Thanks

Would be a real shame to see this event end, I entered a few years and it was a great event to be involved in, was hoping to enter the GT3 if the event goes ahead this year.

If anything needs to be advertised in the "You May Like" stuff cluttering up the bottom of every page, this is it.

Just posted on General Motorsport re this. You have a Council who consist of many members who are of a very different orientation from your average PH'er and my theory is that you could collect as many signatures as you want - but if they are planning to "celebrate" the ending of an event that was born in the early years of the 20th Century this will probably just add to their smug satisfaction in their fight against the evil piston engine and its devotees. The bicycle is, after all, the finest and most noble mode of transport in Brighton.

So this suggestion applies :

I loved it = 4 events a year that really floated my boat in the 1970's/80s and 90's in particular. Le Mans, the FF festival, any Prescott hill climb and Brighton.

Crazy guys on road bikes, 90 year-olds on Vincents who were only a couple of seconds or so off the top end pace, Jim Tiller on (rather than in) the Allard, all the F5000 big bangers and, naturally, the Vebra Chevrolet...the smell of fish and chips mixed with Castrol R and a touch of ozone. That pause at the end of each Top 10 run as we waited for the time to flash up...

I have a theory - the Greenies of B and H will never allow the event in its previous noisy evil piston-engined/polluting guise to be re-born so why not re-invent it for alternative powered cars = electric/hybrid/cows dung etc. It might be a bit pedestrian for a year or two but as technology catches up I suspect we will see some seriously quick times - and, above all, we have competition cars back on Madeira Drive..

Sorry but you will never get a 2012-spec Speed Trials back in Brighton so its going to be either nothing or "if you can't beat them join them" . I'm serious about this, any one with similar views ??

Doubt it!!

Seriously though, the 'greens' were trying to get this done 'on the nod' without going to full council debate.
The purpose of the petition is to force their hand (if more than a certain number sign, they are required to put it to a full vote). My feeling is that with the numbers likely to have signed up, and the views of local traders taken into account, it will be given a green light.
BUT!!!!
It surely cannot go ahead until the road is put back to a suitable condition for the speeds involved, so unless someone stumps up the cash, they may get their own way anyway.
Heads we win, tails you lose.
