The show exists because main stream manufacturers are prepared to supply and support test cars for the show. They will typically turn up with 2 identical cars and a support team so that a breakdown is not apparent.
If a kitcar turned up and thrashed them they will not come back = end of show.
For this reason they will not have an Ultima on the show.

although thats not strictly true is it? they did test a GTR on the old top gear programme, but havent since. But a GTR was used extensively in the TOP GEAR live shows. If a kitcar turned up and thrashed them they will not come back = end of show.

The fact an Ultima was used in the show demonstrates they hold it in high regard plus I suspect the mainstream would not lend them a car for those stunts.

Agreed they did have an Ultima on way back but if memory serves me there was not as much emphasis on the 'league Table' back then. Now I suspect the manufacturers are quite keen on their position in the table.

I believe that the car used in the live shows was either bought or sourced from an outside agency, definately not from the manufacturer, so they could do this with any other manufacturers vehicle and use them in the same manner. The fact an Ultima was used in the show demonstrates they hold it in high regard plus I suspect the mainstream would not lend them a car for those stunts.

Agreed that they didnt have the "league table" back then and I can see the thoughts behind this argument but if what you say was really the case I just cant see them testing Atoms, westfield and caterhams etc.... or indeed anythign manufactured by any small company.
I do not understand! speak always the fastest car on the circuit driven by their stigma.
and every time publish the ranking and the lap times on the board.
speak of MC12, Enzo, GT2, Pagani, McLaren, Atom, etc.: time even remotely close to the record of the GTR!
So I wonder: why do not you talk about the GTR and its performance have shown that in 2008 (I think)?
Maybe it was not an official record? not real?
Always compare the times of the fastest car, but not this year, but ever.
Maybe the factory should act?
If you follow any episode that seems to have never tried a GTR ....

We've had a number of topics on TG lap time before.... The lap time set by the factory wasn't official in TG's terms, we all know that, but then there's the conspiracy theories that the car used was fitted with different wishbones, etc. Lots of debate as to whether that's true / made a difference.
My view is.... who cares?! Look at the way cars get treated on TG. I'm sure JC would lambast the GTR for it's tight cabin, difficult entry / exit, then complain about the switchgear and just about anything else that didn't measure upto Pagani standards of quality, fit, finish and NVH. They'd probably find some excuse to not set a proper lap time and generally rip it to shreds. It's an entertainment show that gains it's viewing figures for being shocking & funny('ish).
I'm going to start a campaign to keep the Ultima OFF Top Gear, thank you very much. I like my car, I don't need JC's endorsement to the public (which I really doubt it'd get anyway).

+1. I think the factory would be mad to try and get the car on TG. I love the programme, but we know their view on anything home built, and how hard they would try to break it. I'd be interested to know what their coverage of the Stratos replica did for its sales.Edited by Pedders on Tuesday 24th December 09:23

This. And I think the answer to the Stratos question is "a great deal........... downwards". I felt very sorry for the company that make it after that episode.356Speedster said:

Clarckson and friends are clowns,
are true but the transmission (I do not like very much, especially when they destroy the car) is widely followed in most of the world
and few people know the Gtr.
in my opinion could only speak well because Gtr is the fastest, then in front of the lap time could not say anything, apart from the usual stupid jokes that an intelligent person does not consider.
deny a comparison means being afraid to lose .....

Not every car gets a fair go and a lap-time tho'. All they need is an excuse not to do the lap properly (e.g. they break it thru' abuse, or Clarkson can't fit in it, etc, etc) and that's it, the car is dismissed now people who don't know it, just think it's rubbish.

If I thought it'd get a fair run, I'd of course say go for it. Unfortunately it's not their sort of car, so I doubt it would. Best stay well clear. I don't need TGs or their audience's affirmations on my car, thank you.
