I've sold a car and the buyer is coming to pick it up some time in the next hour or two.

He didn't want to drive it without tax so I've taxed it online.

I can see the money has gone from my bank account because there is a difference in my 'available balance' which is the same as what the tax cost. It does not show it itemised as a transaction yet. I suppose it will be a couple of days before it appears.

Trouble I have is I've got no receipt because I didn't tick the box to request one (stupidity on my part) and the DVLA vehicle enquiry page still shows the car as 'unlicensed' - I also can't phone the DVLA because they are closed on Sunday.

Accepted I have no tax disc because that will take 5 working days to arrive and not displaying one is an issue but not on the same level as driving without tax.

He wanted the car for his wife for Christmas so we're rushing around trying to sort out all the bits and pieces.

Can anyone think of a way I can show the car is taxed?

Actually, not to worry.

Worked it out.

If you try to buy another tax disc for the same car it will tell you a transaction has already successfully completed.

I don't understand why they don't bother to update their enquiry site quickly. It’s a bit annoying!

Ring your bank with the guy there, they will be able to see the transaction.

True, not a bad suggestion. I'm not sure if I'm set up for telephone banking though!

I think you'll find most banks have contact telephone numbers.

Yes, but if you want to discuss individual transactions on an account you would have to have registered to use their telephone banking service. I'm fairly sure for the account in question I have not registered.

But like I say, for my situation today, all I have to do to demonstrate that the car is taxed is to show my buyer that it isn't possible to buy tax because it has already been bought. It's not ideal but if it were the other way round and I was buying the car I think I'd accept that as proof the tax had been bought.

Am I right in saying that the tax disc will still be sent to the RK at the time the transaction was processed though? So between you you'll still have to work out how he's going to get the tax disc. Not a problem if you know the guy I suppose but would be an issue for a buyer normally.

Do you not get an email receipt or one on the direct.gov site?

It will go to my address and I'll have to post it to him when it arrives.

Only if you tick the box and fill in your email address. I don't trust the government so I naturally give them as little info as possible - sometimes, as today has proved, this can work against me.

Anyway, sale is now complete and he is happy with his new car!
