2010 Cayman S PDK with 38k on the clock. Just has major 4 year service at Tonbridge. Since then the following happens -

First start of the day regardless of time or temperature

Start engine
Loud whiney rubbing noise from engine behind
Pitch of noise rises and falls with revs
sound changes when steering at low speed
Noise continues until engine is warm after about 10 mins
As soon as engine is warm no noise occurs for the rest of the day no matter how long car is parked for
Next day same thing again

OPC say they need to hear it which means leaving it overnight a complete pain!

Sounds to me like something to do with the drive belt or one of the pulleys on that belt?

I am considering ringing Porsche Assist before I even start the car tomorrow so they can hear it on arrival and tow it and leave me with a loaner over Christmas

Sounds like the serpentine belt. Get them to change it - they're not very expensive.

Unless you can find a Porsche tech that graduated from Hogwarts I think you're going to have to leave the car unless you can demo the noise after driving to the dealer.

The description has me suspecting an idler roller bearing but it could something else associated with the accessory drive system. A check of the belt to see if it is suffering from premature degradation due to possibly an accessory drive with excessive bearing play should be done, but the tech will know this without having to be told.

I would not drive the car much if at all until you get this pinpointed and fixed so the best course is to get the car in and get a loaner and drive the loaner over the holidays. While this might be a downer imagine how much worse you'd feel if you drove your car over the holidays and something let go like a water pump and possibly seriously damaged your car?

Yeah this is what I am going to do. It is all under warranty though and started immediately after the service at which I guess they check the drive belt. Porsche assist can pick it up! Thanks

Sounds like the belt.

Mine kept going every few months, eventually changed idle and tensioner pulley too, they cost very little from OPC, since then no issues at all. smile
