The HDI version of the 206 GTI does indeed exist.

When I looked into this about 18 months ago and signed up to the relevant forums to ask questions, the resounding opinion was to avoid at all cost - which was concerning.
Ultimately the 206 was slightly too small so I ended up with an older but bigger 306.
If you want a Diesel 206 the consensus is to stick with the bigger 2.0 HDi engine (DW10). It's heavier, but only slightly worse on fuel and doesn't carry half the problems which come about with the 1.6.
If you can get a 1.6 HDi GTi with a warranty then go for it, but just be aware of the common problems. Lots of anti-pollution gubbins on them can go very wrong and become very expensive - on what would otherwise be a very nice little car.
Never good when an 'owners club' tells you to steer clear - read into that what you like!

That's good advice C.A.R. thank you.
My father in law has a 1.4 hdi that he bought with 7k on the clock and is now just over 260k - used it for his 700 mile a week commute. Started off at 68 mpg (he leaves at 5:00am and ambles) and by the 250k mark was averaging 81 mpg ! Apart from regular servicing nothing broke - ecu shut down at around 80k and car had to be recovered - turned it off and on again and problem resolved - Apparently now just had a new drive shaft.
I take it the 1.4, like the 2.0, isn't jammed full of anti- pollution kit and that the 1.6, like the 2.2, is ?

These early 1.6 HDi engines can be trouble. I do believe the trade refer to them as being chocolate - when fitted into various Peugeots, Citroens and Fords.
Be careful when buying one. Very regular servicing will give more confidence in its likely reliability.
I think the current production engine might be an 8 valve which is more reliable.

Not a great PSA group fan.
I stil struggle to associate GTi & diesel in the same sentance.
I hear you on the second part. IT's figures are close to the 1.6 205 gti but with much better mid-range - not a screamer though.I stil struggle to associate GTi & diesel in the same sentance.
We've had a over a dozen PSA powered idi and hdi and all have been exceedingly reliable - except the current C5 that keeps sulking.
150 - 300,000 miles with no major issues.

As mentioned the DW10 is the one to go for, and a remap from www.hdi-tuning.co.uk adds more speed and LESS fuel.
Wouldn't touch a 1.4 or 1.6HDi with anyone else's, let alone mine.

When we had a 206SW dTurbo I intentionally sought out the 2.0 version despite it being lower powered compared to the 1.6. Peugeot were just starting to get to grips with DPFs with the introduction of the 1.6 to the 206 range and all the teething problems seem to have settled on that model.
The 2.0 was unencumbered, unburstable and quite nippy with a bit of tuning.
Now, if they'd put the 2.0 16v 136 HDi engine from the 307 in there that would have been a whole lot more interesting....

Similar power, but it weighs 230 kg more and with a very numb drive by comparison. The 206 is a pretty poor car by almost any measure apart from purchase price these days.IanMorewood said:
If you are considering a 206 of any flavour I hope you haven't got big feet, catching the brake at the same time as you go for the clutch to change up can lead to embarrassment on a motorway slip road.
I'm 6' 4" with size 11 feet and I'd read about the pedal issue and the awful driving position - Weirdly, I fit just fine, can work the pedals - and find the driving position excellent, couldn't fit in 205 though...
