Not sure if this has been posted elsewhere but there was a horrific crash in London this morning. Three men in an Impreza dead after it smashed into a lorry and blew up.

The scene, going by these pics, is of absolute carnage. Obviously don't want to speculate but arrests have been made and, judging by the wreck, it looks like speed was involved.

Sounds like an awful thing for the locals to witness, as well as an awful way to go for those in the car. In this case it doesn't sound like any bystanders were hurt, but inevitably BRAKE will be all over it campaigning for us to drive at 5mph with a man running in front holding a flag.

Certainly doesn't look like a 20mph bump does it? Best wishes to the families of all those involved, stay safe folks.

fking hell, that must have been a seriously high speed impact.

A sober reminder of what can happen.

Indeed, not much left of that (I reckon the chopping of the roof for access makes it look a bit worse though)

"One witness suggested the Impreza car was fitted with a nitrous oxide kit to make it go faster, in the style of cars in the Fast & Furious films series."

Sounds like an expert to me.

Brilliant isn't it.

Much the same as everyone that was able to tell the cars were travelling at 100mph just by glancing at them or hearing them out their bedroom window.

Horrible and very sad.

When I think back to the stupid things I did when I was young it's a case of "There but for the grace of God....".

Condolences to the families.

I don't agree with the other party involved in a "race" getting arrested for causing death by dangerous driving. From reading cases in the past it seems like the case is based on the fact that it wouldn't have happened if you weren't there. It's not fair as you have no control how the other party drives.

I was once driving a modified 200SX, I was behind a guy in a Subaru Impreza, the road opened up to a national speed limit and he guns it off, i'm behind, my car is cold so i'm not booting it. He proceeds to go around a corner and roll his car down a bank, that was nothing to do with me, I was really far behind him, that said, if he hadn't seen me he wouldn't have done it. The first thought in my mind was if he's dead I could end up in prison. I was in two minds if I should stop or not.

If I didn't stop, they might not get any help for a while as it was down a bank. I decided to stop, call the police and go and help them out. Thankfully the driver and his girlfriend got out with just cuts and bruises. I was worried the police would see two modified cars and decide it was a "race" and try and get us done.

Unlike in the movies, nitrous does not burn.
It is not a fuel, it is just a means of getting more fuel and oxygen into the cylinder.

Tragic for all those involved; victims, families, witnesses and emergency services.

While correct that its not the fuel, it is the oxidiser so If fuel and nitrous are released, both will contribute to a fireball.

Nasty. This is the section: http://goo.gl/maps/GXag8

There's a central reservation but no barriers - not sure why when other parts of the north circular do.

Obviously it'll be investigated properly, but that's either a 40 or 50mph bit of road - even if you weren't speeding, do that into a truck coming the other way doing the same and the car won't come off well at all.

If they were racing then I have zero sympathy whatsoever

Just glad that no one else involved was badly hurt

I disagree. As long as there was evidence of racing, then it is contributary. Racing adds adrenaline into the mix. Two people driving like cocks, each trying to out do the other, is going to be way more dangerous that one person driving like a cock.

In your case you were not involved in a race, and there would be no case to answer.

Bit ironic they crashed into a Warburtons lorry and ended up brown bread.

On a serious note, I was like that once. Ended up not hurting anyone else, just myself before getting old and becoming sensible. I am betting there are not that many people on PH who have not enjoyed quick driving with another stranger on a road, no matter what you call it.

Sad for the families before Christmas, lets not forget it is they that now suffer, forgetting any stupidity.
