C63 in Austria?
Discussion
I recently moved to Austria (from Germany) for work reasons and will be stuck here for a while. I’m eyeing the purchase of a proper fast car before the diesel hybrids take over.
A used C63 Estate would fit my budget of 55k Euro. The problem is that Austria seems to have a truly crazy tax called "NoVA", which is a single payment that has to be paid when a car is first registered in Austria. It appears to be dependant on the price of the car as well as the CO2 emissions and milage.
Cars are subject to the tax laws that were active at the time of the first registration, so if I bought a car that was first registered in the EU in 2009, I’d pay the tax based on the austrian tax formula from 2009.
Many people try to get around all of that by registering their cars in Germany but Austria is cracking down hard on this type of tax evasion, so that is not an option for me.
So I priced out the import tax for a C63 for 40k Euros at the various model years.
2013 16.500€
2012 12.700€
06/2011 11.500€ (tax went up 2011 but mid-year facelift the reduced fuel consumption)
01/2011 12.500€
2010 9.200€
2009 8.900€
2008 8.900€
2007 6.400€
The the tax for a brand new C63 bought today would be around 25.298€ according to the Mercedes site.
The ruling for cars first registered in 2013 is as follows: 25€ per gram above 160g/100km, 25€ per gram above 180g/100km and 75€ per gram above 210g/100km, all added together plus 20% tax on top of that, plus a percentage based fee calculated from the fuel consumption and price of the car.
Isn’t that completely bonkers? And they keep adjusting the tax up for a higher CO2 penalty.
I have found a 2009 C63 Estate, 50000 km with a good spec for 38k Euro in Germany, but the final price with it being registered in Austria is closer to 45k Euro (37000 GBP). Petrol and running costs (rear tires) are not that big of an issue for me.
Surely a remapped S4 would be better suited here because of quattro and cheaper tax but it just seems a bit too ordinary for me.
Facelift would be nice but probably out of reach due to the higher price AND tax increase.
Do you think that the availability of the upcoming new C63 will put a significant dent in the price of the current models? And please tell me I’m not completely insane for considering this car in a country with this tax scheme.

That tax sounds like a pretty bum deal to me
If I were you I would get what I really want, i.e if it is a C63 that you want then get it, you only live once and nothing worse than regretting a purchase imho.
I'm too in the market for a C63 and I have been watching the prices for a while and I think the new model (which I don't like btw) will help drive the prices of the current model (including C63) down....
So I would hold out a little longer.....
Good luck!
