Tom Waits - Now it all makes sense!

OK, I couldn't stand any more Xmas movies tonight, so I thought I'd open up my bottle of Jack Daniel's and play some music using my new headphones. I bought 4 Tom Waits albums some time ago (, and never 'got it' when playing them. (I like buying music that isn't necessarily my taste, on the surface at least - I bought Heart attack and Vine, Mule Variations, Rain Dogs and Swordfish Trombones, ).

However, tonight, I am loving them! They make sense now - especially with a good drink - you need that to cushion you if you're not used to it, I think.....

Tom is the best songwriter on earth. I'm biased though, been listening to him for 30 years, great to see you're taking in early stuff too.

It can take a lifetime to get some of the nuances of his songs, fall in and enjoy.

I really dont know anything of his,apart from "I aint missing you", which I do like - a lot.

Never really tried any more of his stuff, may have to now...

rain dogs, swordfishtrombones and Franks wild years are the best trilogy of albums ever and easily his best works- yes some good tracks on other stuff- but those three are pure quality albums and marked a change in our Tom from what came before to what came after and boy did he pick up a lot of new fans during that period. From there on his albums can be heavy going and hard work but with a few gems hidden within. You do need to be in the mood for him though....

You have to look for the jewels amongst the, er, ordinary, but when you find them it's well worth it. Great songwriter, another artist who chooses his musicians carefully, and makes some outstanding songs as a result. A favourite of mine now for the last 20 years.
