Garmin downloads

Just setting up my shiny new Garmin Nuvi 3598. On downloading maps it says '>3 hours remaining' and the progress bar has moved very slightly in the last 45 mins.

Is this normal?

Yes it is - the files are huge! The download speed is probably limited by Garmin's server rather than your broadband speed.

What is even worse is when that PoS software 'Garmin Express' gets to '100% downloaded, <1 sec remaining, do not disconnect device' and then freezes.....

MapUpdater was MUCH more reliable.

Thanks for the reassurance, I left it alone and it's just finished.

..and after more downloads I can now get directions in English instead of just Danish Spanish Latvian French and Turkish!

Still early days. Compared with my old TomTom it seems impressive but a bit overcomplicated. The map view is very detailed and often seems less clear especially in an urban area, but automatically zooms in at junctions which is clever. There isn't manual in the box, I did manage to locate a PDF manual on the Garmin website once, but I've never managed to find it again.

Built in traffic data seems to work well. It doesn't seem to give a 'mileage to destination' figure which the TomTom did and which I liked.
