Hi all, Merry Christmas! I really need some advice.

Where I live has been flooding, last night, I parked in a pay and display spot, I left it there for around 3 hours...I come back to see if I could move my car to a spot higher up incase any more flooding occurs (road already started to flood). I find my drivers door smashed in with a massive dent, no note. My excess is £1200, would it be better just getting a new door myself? or go through insurance? It was parked opposite a car dealership, not sure if CCTV captured it (unlikely).

Thanks

I'd get a quote for repair, if it's less than a couple of grand then go for it otherwise I'd claim. Bear in mind that your premium will increase next year if you claim. It's unlikely the CCTV will have caught it but no harm in trying, they should be there tomorrow.

A 2009 Clio, anyone know how much it will likely be for a new drivers door?

Scrap yard may be of help.

If you through insurance it will set you back quite a bit due to your high excess plus having a claim against you come renewal time.

If it's only a door, you should be able to sort it for way less than a grand.

As above, if your excess is over a grand (que!?!) then I wouldn't even be contemplating insurance.

If you can get a door in the right spec/colour, then it's a simple enough job to swap over. It only becomes complicated when you have to start painting/matching of the paint...

forgot to ask, do I still need to inform the police about it? will the insurance know if the police are informed? I don't want to inform the police, no one gets caught and then the insurance know, I pay my excess and my premium goes up next year....

If you call the police on the non emergency number, they should be able to tell you if your insurers will find out but realistically I can't see them assigning many resources to it unfortunately.

Some absolute scummer drove into my 2002 VW golf rear door and then drove off, no point in going through insurance as it would just sting me for years to come.
I went to the local breakers yard (huge place, well organised with all the parts on computer) and the bloke on the desk sorted me out with a replacement door for £50, it was even the correct colour and trim !

a quick clean and an hour with some tools to remove the old one and replace and the car is back to where I was before the hit and run.

The benefit of an older car is you can often do this sort of thing to keep costs down.

No note. £1,200 excess. Forget claiming! Just get it repaired yourself or source a replacement door. Don't waste your time with the police. A: they won't care and B: Even if your insurance company doesn't find out about your specific incident it'll probably end up on the police stats for your postcode which insurance companies use to calculate premiums.

Got a photo?
Maybe someone close can whack it out for you and make it a bit more pleasing to live with until you have a few disposable pounds to buy the essentials and get it fixed properly.

Popular car, trim and colour. I don't anticipate it being too hard to find a replacement door.
I did this with a front wing for my 306. I rang the scrapyards starting with the closest until I found on in the right colour 30 miles away. £35 and a couple of hours with the spanners.

You should be able to get it sorted for a LOT less than £1200 OP.

For example; couple of years back a bloke at work came up to me and with the usual "you know about cars, don't you?" Some kind person banged into his wife's Focus estate leaving a massive dent in the driver's door. I got him to phone around the local breakers yards and he managed to pick up an identical door for £45 complete with all the interior trim and window plus mechanism etc and bought it 'round to my house.

Simple 25 minute job to swap the doors over (he gave me 40 quid as well - I didn't want to take it but he insisted).
