XJR air filter completely black!

This car has a full and perfect supplying main dealer history. When is the filter supposed to have been changed? My first dyno run before I did anything at all to the car apart from checking oil was 377 but dyno man said it was rich. No surprise there!

Since then it had a new s/c belt/kit and am about to do squeaky serpentine belt, I've done the supercharger oil too and will get shell helix ultra in. I'll run it again after I've done.

Be interesting to see what difference that makes.

But has anyone seen an airfilter like this? The engine side is clean so it's not blowby and about 3k miles since I bought the car it uses no oil at all so I doubt ring trouble anyhow.

To me it looks like 100k and 6 years of crud.

That does look impressively dirty, has to have been in there a few years I'd have thought.

X308? The supercharged engine should have it's air filter changed every 20k.

That clearly has not.

X350 but if 20, 40 or even 60 I bet it's never been done!

Tomorrow I have a road trip so it'll be interesting to see the effect. My reading told me ages ago that peak torque requires maximum airflow so I guess I might be getting a bit more midrange which would be nice.

Is the filter oily or it just road-grime?

If it's oily, might be worth having a look at this thread: http://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/xk8-xkr-17/oil-a...

Basically, there should be oil separators in the cam covers for the breather hoses, but they're missing on some cars and so oil gets into the intake system...
